Oh, Vrenille is super friendly…in direct proportion to how much benefit he thinks he’ll be able to get out of the situation. For “benefit,” read “compensation for his time, monetary or otherwise.”
Vrenille has literally built his life on selling companionship. That almost always ends up meaning selling sex, but sex isn’t actually the only thing he offers. The way he figures it, to get to selling sex, you have to start by making yourself be someone who a guy wants to spend some time around–you have to adapt to people and their needs without making yourself seem sycophantic; the camaraderie you offer has to feel genuine. And if you do that right, then you can probably get some form of compensation for your company right off the bat–get your new friend to buy you a meal, for example, or at least a few drinks.
All these are things Vrenille excels at. He has a lot of repeat business, relationships he cultivates, patrons he knows well who come to see him again and again. But it does come with a downside: he’s been at this for nearly a decade and he knows his clientele. Which is to say that he’ll be super friendly…if you happen to be human and male.
He’s amicable enough with women, particularly if they’re poor or working class, but he doesn’t see himself gaining anything particular from them, so his attention tends to drift. He is by no means going to have sex with a charr (and doesn’t particularly trust them to begin with) so he’s unlikely to give them the time of day. He’s almost blind to asura. Norn are (ahem) physically strenuous, so he’ll warm up to them only as a last resort. And sylvari…. Sylvari are new. It’s only very recently that he’s ever even spent time around them, let alone considered them as possible sexual partners.
So Vrenille’s friendliness has been a bit like going through life with blinders on: his focus stays tuned in on a single category of people, which makes it a lot harder for anyone outside that category to get to know him or to hold his interest.
