i'm afraid then i'd never get to the writing part because i can't think about them for longer than five minutes without tearing up like my poor babies

like first of all keats was the youngest and he died first okay that's the saddest thing and then shelley died and then byron and don't even get me started on the epic friendship of byron and shelley and oh my gods can we talk more about shelley he was such a darling like he literally read wordsworth at byron until byron was positively nauseous and he really loved keats and when shelley was touring continental europe he was like 'lmao gotta have some fun' and so he wrote 'atheist' behind his name in the hotel registers and robert southey was like ':O shelley is a horrible person omgz' and all of england was like 'shelley.... :/ ' and tbh they were all noodles really because they're so goddamn tragic and so goddamn beautiful and i cry every day okay

I was listening to the audio-book on the bus this morning and I was at the part where Richard goes to that party after they've killed Bunny right and the funniest thing is he doesn't describe the girls he sees very much (e.g. Judy is wearing lipstick, nothing else is given) but he takes the time to say what Cloke looked like leaning over the pool table and chalking a pool cue and how his hair fell in his eyes or something like that. I mean, come on, Richard. You are not straight, boy.

And Richard spends a lot of time describing the men of the group in physical terms, taking special notice in their hands (e.g. that Henry has large pale hands, that Francis has soft and almost feminine hands) while he doesn't spare Camilla, his self-proclaimed raison d'être, much in the way of physical description at all, and when he does, it’s often in relation to her brother. Richard often describes her as boyish, almost masculine, even. She wears her brother’s clothes and she acts like him, too. To me, she even reads as more masculine than her brother, because Charles displays the classic feminine traits a lot more than her (e.g. Charles is more capricious and a bit more moody, which are traits often assigned to female characters in literature).

Another thing I've noticed is how much Richard talks about the colour of Henry's eyes. I mean, he says the twins have grey eyes, sure, but when he says something about Camilla's eyes it feels more like an afterthought than anything else. When it comes to Henry, however, Richard gets almost ridiculous: it's Henry's blue eyes this and Henry's dark blue eyes that. I don't remember – and correct me if I'm wrong – if Richard ever describes what Francis or Charles's eyes are like. He describes Camilla's eyes a bit because I think he modelled his affections for her (which I think were added in retrospect, and I'll explain why I think that soon) after his affections for Henry.

I mean, Richard does pretty much everything Henry tells him to. When in doubt, Richard seeks out or consults Henry, and rarely anyone else. Maybe it's because Henry is the only one to actually ask for something big from him and Richard is eager to please, but I think it's mostly because Richard wants to demonstrate his value. It's his way of showing Henry (and by extension, the whole group) that he is a valuable asset. And look at all the things he does for Henry, and then look at how much he actually does for the girl he 'loves'. To be blunt, he doesn't do shit for her. 

And do we even need to talk about the page and a half that Richard devotes to speculating whether Henry is Bunny's sugar daddy? Does a completely straight man ever contemplate another's sexuality that intensively? I don't think so. And then there's, of course, Richard's endless fascination with Francis, and his stereotypical assumption that because Francis is gay, he must be attracted to Richard. My favourite thing about it is actually the part where Richard is like 'Uh, Francis, I'm not really into you, just FYI.' and Francis responds with a 'And I'm not really into you, either, but you were there, so.' [and I think that's a moment of Francis channelling a bit of his inner Charles, heh], and how taken aback Richard is by that. It's hilarious. 

Anyway, what I was getting at is that I think during the events of TSH, Richard was a lot more in love with Henry than he was with Camilla. I think he later added the bits about his attraction to her, because his words say one thing but his actions tell a different tale. Whether it's because of his internalized homophobia or because he wants to make himself look more ~normal~ compared to the others, or a combination of both, I do not know.
