Sam Riviere asked if I wanted to translate a few of his poems into German for the poetry translation website Lyrikline. A translator only translates into their mothertongue, not out of it, so I asked my good friend Laura Tenschert if she would like to do it instead. I acted as a kind of co-editor with Laura of her translations, and we spent quite a few hours discussing the poems, reading them out loud in both languages, and altering the odd word or bit of syntax here and there. Laura's translations are incredible. Here is one of my favourite poems by Sam, translated by Laura:

über die mondlandschaften von skateparks hinweg bist du 13 j & darfst nicht mehr mit jungs spielen / auf gleis 6 trägst du dein wunderbares cape und bist nicht eigentlich du sondern jemand anderes / während ich ein typ bin der texte missversteht und sie deshalb umso schöner und persönlicher versteht mit deinem dunklen pony weissem hemd und strohhut bist du der blasseste goth beim picknick / entschieden unentzückt von meinem doch so entzückenden freund bist du der inbegriff von desinteresse im bett & in zusammenpassender unterwäsche versteckst du den tunnel den wir im amerikanischen gefängnis gegraben haben / antwortest nicht auf meine sms du bist die aktentasche deren inhalt golden leuchtet mir wird klar ich kann nur mit jeweils einem auge hineinsehen / es ist reine propaganda die pupille ein klecks schwärzester tintelstrahltinte in deiner luxus strickmode machst du werbung für luxus strickmode / & dann & dann blinzelst du

LAURA TENSCHERT has just completed her MA at Goldsmiths College and is preparing a PhD application. She is also a singer songwriter.

SAM RIVIERE was born in 1981, and began to write poems while at the Norwich School of Art and Design. He completed his MA at Royal Holloway in 2006. He co-edits the anthology series Stop Sharpening Your Knives, and is currently working towards a PhD at the University of East Anglia. A recipient of a 2009 Eric Gregory Award, he was recently selected for the Faber New Poets scheme.
