hi im new carat~ im trying to create gifs but its so hard to start i feel like i’m a only sending my posts into a void. what advises do you have for me?

hi!! first off let me say welcome to caratnation! 🎉🎉🎉 it’s a good time over here hehehe ❤️

i think the first rule of thumb is to try and not get discouraged; as you’ve probably noticed the content creation circle on tumblr has greatly declined so it can be really hard to get your stuff noticed, especially when you’re just starting out :( but i promise if you keep working at it your stuff will get noticed!! 

so that being said, i think the main way to help get your stuff out there is to utilize tags and networks. for networks, i primarily use two:

@svteditors is a seventeen network that is open to everyone, even non-members, and they track the #svtcreations tag so make sure you tag your content there so they can find it!!

@kpopgfxnetwork is another network i’m in; they require you to be a member but they just opened up applications! this one is multifandom but that also means it’s a way to expose your content to non-seventeen fans. they track #kpopgfxnetwork

other networks i’m aware of:

@underratedkpopgfxnet is another multifandom network, and they emphasize on supporting smaller blogs. i believe their applications are open! they track #ukpopgfx 

@theseventeentown is another seventeen-specific network, i think their applications are open as well! they track #thesvttown

also for anyone who does seventeen fanart, i run @thecaratgallery which is kind of(?) a network, but i mainly track #seventeen fanart and #seventeen for content :) 

EDIT: okay apparently #svtgifs is tracked by @svtgifsets in which case i apologize for using the tag as a non-member i didn’t know it was a network one :( but it seems their applications are open as well!

now for general use tags, you can use any tags related to your content! in particular for gifs, one of the (what i believe to be) free-use tags is #svtgifs. idk if it’s tracked by anyone but i do think a fair number of people use it. see last bullet above lmao

also while you are free to use as many tags as you want, i wouldn’t overdo it or abuse it... people can actually get pretty annoyed if you flood a tag with completely unrelated content.

and lastly, but certainly not least, be sure to support other content creators! don’t just leave a like, reblog their work, provide feedback in the tags, etc. personally i tend to notice blogs that reblog/comment on my work a lot, and i’m sure that is the same for others as well! 

anyways i hope that helps somewhat!! i assumed this was more about getting your content exposure, if you ever want some advice about making content as well i can provide some feedback for that :)

ahhh hope you’re doing well as well anon, and thank you so much that means a lot ❤️❤️❤️ personally i’m not very picky when it comes to traditional materials... honestly my rec would just be to grab your favorite writing implement and just go for it!! everyone’s different and you’ll start to get a feel for what you like, but you can honestly make anything work.

also under readmore bc this got kind of long sorry lmao these are more like reviews then recommendations

but anyways actual brands; i haven’t tried many as i’m not really a pencil gal and also i’m not sure if you mean graphite or colored but i’ll go over both. it’s also normal for most people to not stick to any one brand but eventually just amass a big collection of stuff they use interchangeably. 

in general the discussion for the best colored pencils is between prismacolors and faber castell polychromos.

i’ve only really used prismas as i’m a big fan of them; they’re extremely smooth/soft to the point where i’d almost describe them as “oily”, and i’ve found almost every other brand too “dry” after using them. they blend super well and are really vibrant overall.

the main complaint i see for them, and where perhaps polychromos does better, is that because prismas are so soft they break easily and are hard to keep a sharp point. you also have to be careful when sharpening them (do NOT run prismas through an electric sharpener); i actually sharpened mine with a box cutter lmao. it’s also really easy to overwork your piece and cause wax blooms if you press too hard.

another thing is both of these brands are kind of pricey... like yes they are amazing quality but it might not be worth it depending on your use cases. 

for graphite pencils... honestly i just use a generic mechanical pencil lmao. for graphite drawings i think brands matter even less; you should care more about the hardness of the graphite:

if you have a controlled hand you can use a single B/2B to achieve most shades, that’s kinda why they’re the standard pencil grade lmao. when i did graphite work i never used anything other than a 4H for really light areas (anything higher is useless unless you have a REALLY hard hand or are doing a lot of extreme detail in light areas), a B/2B for pretty much everything, and then a prismacolor ebony (prob at least a 6B but i’m not sure) for really dark sections. 

the brands i have in my (really old) toolbox are prismacolor and general’s kimberly but again the grades are more important for graphite. while there is a noticeable difference between brands for colored pencils, i think the way graphite pencils are made is pretty standard so you probably won’t see much of a difference between brands.
