As much as the king liked to stay in the peaceful garden of his throne room, it was nice to get some fresh air every now and then. Specifically, Snowdin. It was hell enough just to get through the scorching heat of Hotland (especially because he had thick fur), but that was another story, for now.
Several subjects smiled and waved once they saw him strolling through the jovial town of Snowdin, and he politely greeted them back, as he made his way towards Grillby’s. He’d seen it several times, just that he hadn’t had the time to check it out.
His looming shadow enveloped the floor of the diner as cold wind seeped through, before he quietly shut the door, smiling all the while.
Out of the corner of his eye, however, he noticed a particular person, specifically Sans, and recognized them as one of the sentries that kept an eye out for humans. Normally, they were the ones to capture humans and send them to the capital.
Taking his mind off the subject, he approached the skeleton and smiled.
❝ Howdy-- are you Sans? It is a pleasure to meet you, I am Asgore- although I’m sure you’re heard of me. ❞
There was a skeleton standing behind them, and he sets what appears to be... a... tiny pretzel. On their shoulder. And he walks away. - m-egabonavia
((I don’t have anything witty or funny to say about this, I just enjoy the mental image of a random Sans appearing in the darkness in Frisk’s mind, plonking down a pretzel and vanishing. Leaving Chara like “?????? WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED”))
Monstrous Peace
m-egabonavia:
Once upon a time, humans and monsters had gone to war. And once upon a time, the monsters won such a war.
But it hadn’t been a clean win – at least, not to some. The monster king, wisest of them all, had surrendered himself and his kingdom to prevent more blood and dust from behind shed. It’d been a diplomatic move, and monsters had been kept entrapped by humans in the meantime while their sentence was determined for having ever reacting so poorly in the first place. There was talk that they might be shoved beneath the mountain in a specific country, or made into human slaves, bred like animals for their own purposes. Terrible fates to be sure, but…
It hadn’t been fine for quite a few. They broke off from the camps they’d been held in, cutting down humans by the hundreds overnight in a strategic execution, winning back the land once and for all. The war had ended, but it had been ended in the worst possible way.
King Asgore and Queen Toriel abandoned these monsters, harboring the surviving humans within their borders with a promise for peace. Those who disagreed with his choice took to boats and caravans, settling their kingdoms in far off lands and creating their own personal monarchies to govern over themselves.
Sans had been born within King Asgore’s country, destined to serve such a king from the start. He’d been groomed for the role from a young age by the king’s personal alchemist, Gaster, taught all that he needed to know to eventually replace him in the court when he would either die or simply be given an honorable retirement within the castle itself. His brother, in turn, was allowed to live alongside him, although without the true benefit of a lifetime of training in really anything; the guard’s captain, Undyne, seemed not to have the confidence that he could handle a true life or death fight, and any other leader within the court agreed as much. Papyrus had confidence, though, which was enough for Sans to calmly encourage him to explore such venues while either had the opportunity to do so.
The royal alchemist died when he was nearing maturity from his own magic, and he became the automatic replacement. And that was where he’d remained since for a solid decade, happy to do what he’d been trained to do with the promise of safety and security to always follow him thereafter.
…Papyrus got sick.
It was rare, but monsters sometimes ‘fell’, their SOULs enraptured by something beyond reality, surely, and forcing them to fall into a deep sleep, barely alive but barely dead. Alchemists had been trying for years to find a cure; Sans was no different. Upon realizing that his brother could very well pass on at any given moment on any given day, he thought he only had one choice to take: he’d have to cross over to a nearby country and take the only known potential cure from its forests, and then leave this one permanently shortly after returning with it to avoid a traitor’s death.
The trip had been smooth, more or less, as he’d bribed one of the few boats that was allowed safe passage between that land and the other to get himself across, cramped between shipping crates for near weeks on end before ever touching shore again. Upon finally exiting, however, he was immediately met with swords at his neck and chains on his wrists before he could even make so much as a motion to charge at them.
It was many hours before he was allowed to see light again, torn out of a prisoner’s caravan and dragged through the light of evening into a rather plain and small looking castle. He was handed to nearly a dozen different people, suggestions being made as to who would have to deal with him and who had the most use for an extra, forced hand. Some had too many slaves to deal with, people who’d sold themselves for the money to send back to their families. Some simply didn’t want him, unable to see how having a strong-minded alchemist with a feeble frame would be able to do anything reasonable.
“Give him to the bodyguard. He doesn’t have anyone. “
Unceremoniously, he found himself thrown at the feet of someone much taller than he was, head forced downwards as muffled voices above him explained his presence. A few minutes of debate back and forth… and the tension on his skull was released, allowing him to shoot his gaze up with what was almost a silent, animal-like snarl, teeth bared and eye flashing before dying away to a blank socket. It was a useless ability without any sort of hand movement.
If there was ever a way to look more uncooperative without actually saying anything, then he would have chosen as much.
It had been at least a few years since the fall of the Dreemur family. While alive they had remained in a state of neutrality. They refused to be involved in war. Eventually, seeing the pain and suffering of both humans and monsters, The King and Queen had made their nation a safe haven. Humans were welcome to come and settle in small settlements a little ways off from monster towns. As long as they obeyed the law of the land humans could stay within them.
Unfortunately, this made them a target. Small groups of humans or monsters would try to attack anyone that tried to come into the country. Each groups aim would simply be to destroy the other. At one point there was absolute carnage occurring within the nations borders. Queen Toriel immediately went with a small army to solve the dispute. King Asgore insisted on helping out as well. While the fight was won it resulted in the death of both the King and Queen.
That day was put into history books. The King and Queen had vanquished nearly every opponent on their own. There were only ten other casualties on their side out of the eighty soldiers they had brought with them. Their children, Asriel and Chara were orphaned.
Papyrus and Sans had been close personal friends of the Royal family. So they had immediately taken them in. That however, by some strange law that Papyrus swore was bullshit, made them the new royal family. Sans was made King shortly after that. Even though Papyrus was the older brother, he had a reputation that...wouldn’t have held much weight. Their were some that had wanted Papyrus to take the role but---he really didn’t want it either way. Things moved so quickly it nearly gave him whiplash.
At first some had doubted Sans, but he proved to be fairly wise and capable. With Gerson as his adviser he was growing more each day. Papyrus stayed at his side as a protector, always watching his brothers back. There were still some skeptics and honestly Sans could be far too nice. Normally, someone from the army would take the role of bodyguard....
....and they did for the most part. But Papyrus would always be around to check on his brother. They wouldn’t stop him. Even if he wasn’t in the army itself he had supplied the army with weapons for years.
He was an inventor. Shields, armor, weapons, and even storage devices. You name it and he’s probably made it. He had a strong reputation of being a masterful inventor and blacksmith. Although he had a history of laziness and well, just being a bit strange...his role was important. They would not keep him from his brother.
But other than getting acclimated to a new routine there had been no real strife for Papyrus. Nothing for him to get too involved in. Until Now.
“....no. Since when have I ever been interested in having a prisoner?” He avoided using to term slave. He hardly respected the practice and wanted nothing to do with it. There complaints went right through him. But as he tilted his head down to look at the prisoner...
...looked so much like his bother that it made him feel uncomfortable. Normally he could just say no. This skeleton looked ready to give him a hard time. But...
If he didn’t take the other monster then who would?
“Alright, alright I get it. I’ll take him off your hands. Go nag someone else.” He waved the guards away, taking the chain that connected to the other skeleton. “Okay....” Fuck what was he doing? Papyrus sighed and walked to his quarters, no use in standing around.

> Send me a 🌙 for my muses reaction to your muse tucking them into bedℱ – ;; It wasn’t uncommon for the creature to be out all night, as uncomfortable as it often made her; the darkness rarely took the risk of attacking or even approaching during the daytime, choosing instead to follow its prey unseen until it regained the upper hand. The human, occupied by monsters and puzzles and conflict, hardly had the time to notice its presence, and it used the hours of the day as a chance to sneak closer, unnoticed by the world. But Flint knew. And she waited. As dangerous as it could be to fight the entity in its own domain, the creature hardly had any other options. It kept so close to the human on every other occasion that any conflict couldn’t possibly go unnoticed. And, after all, Flint had hundreds of years of practice; it couldn’t be said that she went in unprepared. But as her tired, injured body carried her through the forest to her cabin, she wondered why she could’ve possibly spent so long putting herself through this. Of course, her victory lessened the weight of the fatigue that plagued her, and her pride was pleased with tonight’s work; and while she was never displeased to have her ego stroked, it wasn’t quite enough to dull the ceaseless aching her efforts left her with. Flint trudged through the snow to the porch of her cabin, nearly collapsing from relief as she realized how close she was to rest. In fact, the safety of the cabin was clearly enough to reassure her, and her legs gave out the moment she opened the door. The exhausted creature hardly noticed when the impact with the wooden floor never came, and the time between that moment and her gentle landing on her bed was missing altogether. When her eyes reopened, they were met with the faintly glowing sockets of the familiar skeleton. He had fallen asleep on her couch earlier that day after he’d dropped by; with 1 HP, Flint was more grateful than anything for his lapse of consciousness. At least he fell asleep somewhere safe. But it surprised her, now, to see that he was still there; the creature was sure he’d have left hours ago, returned home to his brother. And yet, here he was, wrapping blankets around her as if this was a normal occurrence. Her tired mind couldn’t register much more than that, and it certainly didn’t have the capacity to express her appreciation or surprise. Instead, a bruised wing lazily curled around him, flopping him on top of her in some strange, tired form of affection and thanks. Both feathered limbs now wrapped around the monster, holding him securely in place as the creature’s lips curled into a tired, content smile. Her mind was as exhausted as her body, and it processed very little as a result; but she was safe, warm, and with her friend. That was more than enough.

ℱ – ;; She’d like to say it had come all at once, unprecedented and entirely out of the blue; that there was no way she could have possibly predicted or stopped it. But it was avoidable, she knew that well; the creature had wanted -- that was the problem. The winged being was in no position to have desires, not when they conflicted with what needed to be done. But she had yearned so desperately for their quiet escape to last just a bit longer; she was only recently coming to understand how much she valued her visits with the skeleton, and how much she had come to rely on them. His company was in such drastic contrast with the repetitive, robotic routine of her life; in those moments, nothing had to be done. She could simply be, not burdened by anything outside the cabin’s walls. His presence offered her solace, for they didn’t need to speak; they understood without the need for words, and the chance to simply exist in such complete percipience was unrivaled by anything she had ever known.
But this was the perfect reminder to send her spiraling back into her harsh reality; that would never be important.
She’d neglected her self-appointed duties, only for a few days; she’d wanted to rest, enjoy the brief, much-needed respite Sans offered her. And as she stepped through her door, the darkness reminded her that there would always be consequences.
It had grown -- she thought it had, at least, but perhaps her fear had simply morphed it into a taller mountain that she would never be able to climb. It made no difference. The barrier around her home that her magic maintained held strong, but the hold the darkness had tightened around her mind drove her to walk beyond its safety. It wasn’t until she was sufficiently smothered in the entity and its animosity that she even noticed she had moved.
It took it no time at all to seep into her weakened mind, and her efforts against it fell through like sand through a sieve. Flint had started to feel, and that may as well have given it the skeleton key to every one of her locks. This was not like any time before; she did not have a choice to let it in or fight it off. Her immunities were solid and plenty, but emotion was a virus she had never been prepared to fight off. The battle was lost the moment she had opened her door.
His voice prompted a flare of panic, such a fearful awareness that the darkness nearly recoiled as if blinded. It was going to hurt him. Worse yet, it was going to use her to hurt him. And there were few things in this world that this weakened creature valued, cared for, but this skeleton had become one of those exceptions.
“Run,” she ordered, though her voice did not hold the commanding strength she had intended. It shook with desperation instead, and she changed her form all at once, sending the entity’s shadowy tendrils flying back -- if only for a second. At her full height, she towered above their grasp until they adjusted, and her wings spread themselves wide to keep them at a distance.
While her mind had taken itself back, offering her the luxury of control, it did not change that her enemy, her source, had the advantage. And it had seen him. And if it took her back, it would find him.
