You may have heard of Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu LOVE!, an anime that got translated as “Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE!”. It was an humoristic anime and a parody of the magical girl genre, involving boys instead of girls but keeping the ridiculous outfits, names, transformation sequences and punchlines. It also added a monster of the week formula as ridiculous and nonsensical as any Power Rangers television show.
Well, this anime got a sequel, called “Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu Happy Kiss!”, Cute High Earth Defense Club Happy Kiss! A sequel that takes all of the ridiculous, over the top elements of the first parodic series, but here plays them straight and seriously, ignoring the fact that the original was supposed to be a parody and not something serious.
Well, this is from this sequel.
Since we have a main group of magical boys, we also have a group of rival “dark magical boys”, who are also the student council of the high school where the show takes place. Here is one of these three “ennemies”, called Maasa Shirahone.
He appears at first as a bubbly, cute, childish “pixie boy”, who uses his smallness, cuteness and good look to make everyone believe he is just a kind and sweet boy. But several times we see that there is something darker underneath - he seems disdaining, a bit sadistic, he deems ugliness as a great sin and whenever something displeases him he quickly insults it, telling it to die and “get fat”.
And in episode five of the series we discover why exactly he has these weird obsessions with ugliness and fatness: he used to be obese himself when he was younger (middle school I think?), and he apparently suffered from it. For example, everyone kept being amazed at how much he ate at each meal, the boys in his class saying they couldn’t possibly do as much as him - and while for them it was a compliment (because it is state in this show the boys admire those that can eat a lot, and by default like huge greasy meals) for Maasa it was just a reminder of how gluttonous he was. Another example: for a play adaptation of Bunbuku Chagama, they decided to cast him in the main role of the tanuki, because of his old-sounding name on one side, but also because he was the fattest of the class (since tanukis are supposed to be fat creatures). And while most of the people in the class were amazed and happy for him that he got the lead role of the play, Maasa was just sad because of the reason behind him becoming the lead.
Anyway, all of that lead him to go on a “foreign trip” to diet completely and become slim to be point even his cousin had a hard time recognizing him. He came back to a different school where he thought nobody of his past would knew him, changed his name to “Maasa” and started to rebuild himself completely from scratch, creating a new persona for the rest of his life.
Which isn’t really quite healthy, but at the same time Maasa isn’t a healthy character either.
