two equally insanity-inducing lines when you know anything about mabel’s childhood my god. the invocation of choice (choosing to stay in one room forever + choosing therapy) and then blithe reference to lacking autonomy (belle as the beast’s captive + you don’t—read: can’t—talk back) but still being framed through that idea of choice. the (somewhat) privileged (but still fraught!) position of being able to romanticize captivity and imagine therapy wherein it’s the client who holds the power. contrasted with mabel’s current position, childhood abuse, and experiences as a psychiatrized individual.
i really do not like the way mabelpod talks about women sometimes. specifically lines like 'all secret places belong to women' and 'women have been sewing for thousands of years' - it just all feels like it's taking the system of gender at face value, like there really are these innate differences between men and women that aren't societally created. we can talk about patriarchal oppression without naturalising it, can't we?
u know that post going around the dash atm abt how people talk abt straight women’s relationship to patriarchy and dating men mabel’s ‘long line of women complicit in the reduction of themselves’ monologue is perfectly emblematic of that!
Maybe that’s what it’s like being pregnant. Okay, weird thought. I’m sorry. It just made me think about – carrying someone, kind of. Everything I do, I do it holding you, or the idea of you. Does that make sense? No, god, don’t answer that, I always pick the stupidest times to say these –
pregnant with the liminal nongirl you're in love with and have never seen and are talking to 24/7 in the loneliest of companionships...normalgirl anna
