)O( KITCHEN WITCH TALK )O(
Hello fellow kitchen witchlings! It’s the time of year--my favorite time! Fall. Just reading the letters makes me smell damp ground and smoky air. Faaalll. Fall and winter are actually my two favorite seasons, and I’m pretty sure it’s because of all my favorite foods come at this time of year! Potatoes, pumpkins, meats, apples, and bread, to name a few. YES I LIKE BREAD AND I’M A WITCH. SO WHAT?! Now, Mabon is interesting because if the scholars are right, this holiday and how we celebrate it (a 2nd feast, the first being Lughnasdha which is Irish in origin) is essentially a modern thing--it wasn’t celebrated by our pagan ancestors. But you’re not here for a history lesson right? NO. You’re here for FOOD TALK. Y’all, I’m going to stir this cauldron a little, so bear with me! I find Mabon interesting because it’s celebrated as a “Witches Thanksgiving”, though there’s quite a feast on Samhain too! Now, when looking up food correspondences to add to my already large list of things I like to cook for Mabon, I noticed that for Mabon apples and pumpkins were listed, and the same applied to Samhain. Now, it’s MY personal preference that I see apples to be used ONLY for Mabon (for that sabbat. You can make apple anything anytime you want, of course!), and not for Samhain. Samhain is pumpkins. And I’m sure there’s 5.6 million of you saying pumpkins are for Mabon. But I ask you this: Do you carve pumpkins and make pumpkin pie and pumpkin puree and roasted pumpkin seeds in September? NO. You do that on Halloween. Again, *MY* personal opinion. So when I give you recipes (in another post following this one) you’ll notice that pumpkin ANYTHING will not be included. But you can bet apples will be! And potatoes! And meat!......And more potatoes! Okay and probably more apples, what can I say!? What are your thoughts? Do you think pumpkins and apples belong to both holidays, or one more than the other?
