Sadly no. My school might offer it next year, but all the Syrian-Iraqi specialist profs are on mental health breaks this year for obvious reasons. Just Ancient Hebrew at the moment :P

However, if people think I wouldn’t start learning akkadian and practicicng cuneiform if I had regular access to pieces of clay are very much mistaken (what are you tlaking about, this is totally a pot. Just a very flat one.) XD

I know oh my god. or just generally things like that where I'm supposed to be less feminine to seem more professional. its like god forbid people find out i'm actually -- GASP -- a woman (sHOCKING)

YES oh my god this (and then there’s also the women who get shit for dressing/acting “not feminine enough” so it’s a very narrow range of acceptability)

I feel this so hard :/ I've also been told to modulate my speech patterns, and I totally do - but I kind of hate that people won't believe I'm smart or professional if I talk 'like myself'.

(Esp since my brother, who talks like a total frat bro - but who knows, like me, how to turn it off and on - does NOT get these kind of 'tips')

Ugh yes. Speech/accent policing is the worst, and it’s so much harsher for women along all prejudice dimensions (age/race/class etc.) than for men.

COME ONE, COME ALL: the 2013 feanorian christmas sweater bash!

Hey guys, long time no see! It's Ambarussa here, and I don't know about you but I just had a lovely christmas dinner with too many relatives. *sighs* Anyway, I've finally got some free time to say hello. My brothers are all doing their own thing and hopefully shouldn't interrupt. Anyway - look what I got! Moryo knitted me this great fluffy scarf and Curvo went nutters bejeweling one of my old shirts.  (idk what is up with him man but it looks pretty awesome so why not wear it?)

So this year mom and dad were still a bit mad at each other and stuff but the food was great and it helped distract everybody and Tyelko was a bit crazy so that helped, and

TYELKO ARE YOU IN THE HALL DON'T THINK I DON'T SEE YOU

WHAT ARE YOU DOING ...(several minutes later)....

I fucking hate brothers.

He said that all of us have to wear those ugly-as-shit christmas sweaters Indis got us (red on red?! really? does she have NO sense of color?!?) and he forced me into this and threw my jewelry at me and ran off. Presumably to do the same thing to Macalaure, since I saw him by the bathroom a few minutes ago and he's still in the vicinity.

Well, let it never be said that I can't take a cue. Everybody, get your sweaters on and come join us for the BIG FEANORIAN CHRISTMAS SWEATER BASH! :D

(those of you who aren't participating can you still reblog this so that we can get as many people as possible? macalaures and I planned this way in advance and beleggs is joining etc, but we'd like a bunch of other people too! And of course other Finweans are very welcome. If you're not sure if you'll have time, you can always throw an outfit on and take a bunch of pictures with various expressions etc so that you'll still be able to post even after you've taken everything off.)

I think honestly this isn't something specific to particular cultures in the Tolkienverse, it's something specific to the upper class, so I'm not sure how well it relates to oppression, considering the privileged own the valuable objects

mm, I see. it's not so much that I'm thinking of in-universe oppression; it's not (necessarily) how these attitudes harm people or contribute to any sort of dynamic within Middle-earth itself. I'm thinking of how these attitudes relate to ones that are involved in or used to perpetuate oppression with irl issues, and why even when the Middle-earth context is different, the place where people/writers/whatever and their attitudes are coming from here, makes me uncomfortable seeing that sort of thing. if that makes sense.

I've personally never seen any group called too greedy by the fandom (obviously some groups are in-universe). which is what I meant, that I'm baffled, because most groups are materialistic.

ahh. yeah, definitely a personal experience thing then. (which, I mean I don't think I've seen any outright statements along those lines either; it's usually more subtle/oblique stuff that unfortunately I don't know how to describe very well when an example isn't sitting in front of me.)

Fingolfin went looking for his brother to ask him to play (perhaps Feanor would say yes to making a little wooden horse for him?) and found him asleep in the library. When Finwe came looking for his youngest child he found a unique scene - Nolo was sitting on the table, just watching Feanaro snooze away. The child had likely never seen his formidable older brother in such a relaxed state, and couldn't resist observing. This is #2 in the feels series and is dedicated to macalaures.
