interview with MA CATHARIS ET LA MORT
1- where are you from?
We were born and raised in Puerto Rico, and are living in the Metro Area right now.
2- what do you do in the band?
I (Xavi) play drums and do back up vocals whilst, Fabo and Manu play guitar. we all tend to share vocal roles. On a side note, Manu switched to bass guitar on our East Coast Tour w/ Kaour Nagisa.
3- what are your upcoming projects?
We are currently in the midst of deciding what we’re going to do with our line up concerning who plays bass. We are working on side projects for the time being. Regarding MCELM we have plans of writing a full length, before summer 2015 arrives, and we’d love to tour the west coast, so we’ll try to make that happen.
4- tell us something that we don't know but should know about your band.
We've all known each other since grade school, I’ve known Manu since kinder and we met Fabo in 6th grade. I guess we go way back.
5- what bands do you like these days? what have you listened to today?
I tend to listen to a lot of Explosions in the Sky’s, specially "All of the Sudden I Miss Everyone" and This Will Destroy You’s self titled album. Toru Okada, Grown Ups, Trash Talk, Algernon, Biggie Smalls, Blink182. Today I listened to Joyce Manor’s self titled.
6- do you have friends in bands or who run labels/zines that we should know about?
From here you should definitely check out our friends Kitsch, we released a split ep with them on summer. And Kaoru Nagisa from VA, do check them out.
7- why are you in a band and what do you want to accomplish in said band?
I love being able to be in a band and play/write music with my friends. there’s not much to do here, so being in a band just gives me a way to vent from the norm. i don’t know what I’d be doing if I wasn’t playing in band. Personal goals for me are to get better at drumming, and getting to visit/play other countries, explore what’s beyond this island.
8- how did you decide upon your band’s name?
Well, at first we lied what catharsis meant, but stumbled upon other bands that have the one name, so we decided to add the other next sure thing in life, which is death, therefore My Catharsis and Death. Everyone has a breaking point from time to time, that being said, and the style of music, I think it fits.
9- when was the last time you slept on a floor?
The last time i slept on a floor was when we played in Total Drama Island (Il). there weren’t any beds available and we were a pack of 11 kids touring. Also we didn’t have sleeping bags, so Fabo and I, used folded up t-shirts as pillows, which made for a serious neck pain the next day. I found Manu sleeping sitting up against the kitchen oven. That show was insane though, they wrecked the basement ceiling when Yusuke was playing.
10- do you have anything more to say?
Thanks Julien for this interview. Just want to tell kids to pick up and instrument, or a mic and make music. You never know where it will take you, for us it has been so much hard work, but in the end it has paid off sevenfold through experiences and awesome people we’ve met so far. Hopefully we get to do this for years to come!
