I didn't have a purple background, but initially, Master Windu was supposed to have a blue saber, so this will have to do. The first toy available to us from Episode l, was a mail away figure of Mace, which came with a different hilt, but a blue blade. It appears that his fighting style was so close to that of a Sith, that he was given a purple blade. In reality, Samuel Jackson asked Lucas to have a "standout" looking weapon, as he was the second baddest Jedi, next to Yoda.
