Previously located in the basement of the Accelerator Building, which is now undergoing demolition, the Central Shop (also known as the Central Machine Shop) housed tools and resources for the design, construction, and repair of scientific instruments for the University’s Physical Sciences Division. Combining a high level of mechanical knowledge and scientific expertise, the shop’s machinists, including the person pictured here in 1974, worked from blueprints to build and troubleshoot research equipment for students, professors, and physicians alike.

🛠️ Hands-on skills matter just as much as textbooks and tests! Bringing back shop class in public schools means giving students the opportunity to learn practical trades, build confidence, and discover career paths that go beyond the classroom. 🚀
From carpentry to mechanics, welding to design, these skills not only prepare young people for the workforce but also teach responsibility, teamwork, and problem-solving. 👩🏫👨🏫 Every student deserves the chance to explore their talents and create something real with their own hands. ✨
It’s time to bring back shop class and invest in the future of American education. 🇺🇸
