The Nguruvilu is a fox-like creature found in Chile. The Nguruvilu is described as a serpent-like fox with hand-like claws on the end of its tail. The Nguruvilu is said to cause whirlpools as well as live in them. The Nguruviluis is said to make the water shallow to encourage people to cross and if they do they get attacked by the creature and the only way to safely make it across the river is by boat. A Shaman called a “machi “or a Sorcerer called a “kalku” can be hired to get rid of a Nguruvilu where gifts would be offered in return the Shaman will then dive into the whirlpool and come up holding the Nguruvilu and will threaten it with a magic knife saying they will kill the creature if it harms another person and everyone in the village has to be there to witness this event. The Shaman will then release the Nguruvilu back into the river and the whirlpool will then despite and then a party will be held celebrating the now safe travel of the river and the Nguruviluwill then move downstream and try to attack people at a different village.
