What I love best about Mack and Fitz's relationship is that Mack was there for Fitz when no one else could figure out how to deal with him post Ward's fuckery. He didn't treat Fitz with pity but he didn't treat him like there was nothing wrong with him either. He acknowledged that Fitz was not okay but he still treated him like an equal and believed in him and he didn't act like Fitz being different was something to create a huge fuss over, or be awkward with him about, like the others who just treated him like a fragile flower who'd snap and break any moment if someone said or did the wrong thing around him.

Mack didn't act like that. Mack acknowledged and validated his problems and continued respecting his skills and him as a person. He provided whatever Fitz needed at the moment, whether it was tough love, friendship, a listening ear or just someone to be with. And no one else did that. They tried, yeah, but they couldn't quite figure it out the way Mack did. So it's natural that Fitz and Mack got closer over time, and for Fitz to come to Mack with his problems instead of going to Jemma. I think Jemma is a little bit resentful about that, but she's not sure what to do about it. Fitz is still bitter that she acts differently towards him, which puts Mack's behavior in greater contrast and probably drives Fitz more towards Mack.

So Mack's betrayal, however momentary, must have been extremely painful for Fitz even though he handled it pretty well. To realize that Mack's been a double agent this whole time, working for someone else - just like Ward, although of course Ward's betrayal was of a much greater magnitude - was a huge blow to Fitz. It probably felt a lot like he just kept losing everyone he looked up to and considered a friend - Ward, Jemma, even Skye in a way, and now Mack.

The reason I say that Mack's betrayal was momentary is because of Mack's words - "I would never hurt you, buddy, you know that" - and the fact that he more or less proved that he cares the next moment when he shielded Fitz from an explosion with his own body. True to his word, Mack did not hurt Fitz - he protected him with his own body.

So later on when Weaver asks Jemma to take a look at Mack, she looks to him for confirmation, knowing he's Mack's friend, his "turbo", his "little buddy" - and he nods at her to go ahead. Jemma knows that Mack is important to Fitz, and she respects this fact enough to seek his permission? approval? assurance? that it's okay - Mack won't hurt her and he's alright. Fitz still trusts him, is willing to give him a second chance. And Jemma is coming to respect that and accept it.

I'm just really invested in the relationship between Fitz and Mack, and really eager to see how it goes from here.
