Blood bee (Sphecodes app.) on New York aster (Symphyotrichum novi-belgii). A rare encounter with a male blood bee - so rare in fact that I had no idea what I was photographing. For some reason I seem to only encounter females, until now that is. There are distinct differences. A soaking wet leafcutter bee stranded on a Canada thistle flower. This happens from time to time, a bee out on her daily routines gets struck by an unexpected change in the weather and cools down to a point where flight isn’t possible. This time of the year I’ve seen some bees strand for days. A bumblebee covered in loads of pollen after visiting a rose of sharon flower. Watching one of these shrubs in full bloom makes for an entertaining bit of bee watching. The bumbles often get themselves so laden in pollen that flying becomes a very ungraceful task. A sweat bee (Lasioglossum spp.) dwelling in a sea of pearly everlasting flowers (Anaphalis margaritacea). A good patch of pearlies usually attracts a thrilling array of pollinators. I find them growing almost exclusively on dusty disturbed roadsides, except in the high mountains where they surprisingly inhabit glorious pristine meadows. The lowland plants are the ultimate flower for the bee enthusiast who has little interest in gardening.
