After the flesh of the Marah fruit decays, it leaves behind this mesh skeleton which bears resemblance to a loofah. These usually have 4 (but not infrequently 6) chambers housing 8 or more large, hard seeds.

Marah macrocarpa, the wild cucumber of california. Its fruit is bright green and covered in spikes. When they decay it leaves behind a compartmentalized cage of fibery matter trapping large seeds inside. Each plant originates from a large caudex and will return year after year. These woody growths can grow to almost 1 meter in diameter for the species.
