A woodpecker I can get along with
Why, you might ask, is this woodpecker grazing in the grass, rather than jackhammering away on a tree, or on the cedar siding of our house?
Because it's a Northern Flicker, which takes a more grounded approach to its meals. Although the Flicker is capable of clinging to trees and routing out bugs with its beak, it prefers to dig in the dirt and lap up ants with its barbed tongue.
I've had more than one dispute with the other kind of woodpeckers out here, drilling holes in our house. The Flicker, on the other hand, can have all the ants it wants.
