Politics aside, history was made this past week. Vice-President elect @kamalaharris is a trailblazer, being the first woman of color and of South Asian descent to be elected to the nation’s second highest office. And for a Desi girl like me, that gave me all the feels and the tears. Being someone who came from a multi-cultural household, I always felt a little weird. “Why can’t my name just be Jennifer?!?” I used to argue with my parents when I was growing up. “Do I really have to wear that saree??” I would beg my parents to not make me wear it before we would attend a family function. I didn’t want to stand out, or be seen as “not the norm” because I was an insecure, angst-ridden teenager who eventually rebelled and would sneak out of the house, go to clubs at 15, and date older boys behind my parents back (sorry Mom and Dad!) I didn’t feel like I ever fit in or was “normal” and that was a huge deal to me. I never realized, until much later, what a gift my diversity truly was and is. You see, my Dad came to this country from Pakistan in the 1960’s, where he continued his education and training to become a doctor. He moved to Texas, met my mother, created our family, and worked his ass off for decades to build his practice, provide for all of us, and to live the American dream. For someone who arrived in this country from a poor village in Pakistan with $30 in his pocket, a torn up suitcase, and lots of grit, perseverance, and hope that his daughters would grow up in the land of endless possibilities, this is a big deal. It’s happened, and I am so here for it. So proud, Madam VP ❤️ #redcarpetroxy #roxymanning #kamalaharris #madamvp #desi #desigirl #pakistani #pakistanigirls #khangirls #khandashians #americandream https://www.instagram.com/p/CHYeZyMJHmG/?igshid=18jtt39prdxxk
