The Madden series is one of the longest-running, most beloved and regularly most infuriating franchises in gaming history. It first hit the world in a...
I seem to have reached the end of Madden 13. Following Super Bowl LXXVI, the game forcibly retired now-95-year-old Tom Coughlin, the “character” I was purportedly playing in the career mode. The game literally told me to stop playing it.
This took just about three years (which I guess makes the $60 pricetag for the game average out to a decent value). Three years of shifting headcanons about shifting rosters. I got 61 people into the Hall of Fame, plus a half-dozen or so I could’ve gotten over the hump in the next couple of seasons, and a few sets of players became partners in life and love as well as on the field. But now there are so many of my babies I can’t play with any more, their progress halted.
Ever since I found out that the game only has 30 draft classes, I wanted to know what would happen if I played through 30 years--would it crash, or cycle through the drafts again, or what. Here we are.
I kind of don’t know what to do with myself now. It seems foolish to start another career mode without the current Giants roster; if I’d reached this point a year ago I might have just restarted this game, but now I want Odell Beckham. It also seems a tad foolish to buy the new game for the PS3, but I don’t want to drop $400 on a PS4 for the sake of one game.
Why I Can't Play Shovel Knight, and Our Obsessive Gaming Tendencies
Editorial: #ShovelKnight has Awoken my Obsessive Gaming Demons. What are Obsessive Gaming Tendencies?
Shovel Knight was one of my most anticipated games to come out on PlayStation platforms this year. It received tremendous praise upon its initial release and the PlayStation Vita seemed a perfect home for the Knight’s conquests. It runs great on the Vita, but that doesn’t change the dilemma I face when playing it. It is a problem I think most gamers can relate with, perfectionism. (more…)

Just won the Super Bowl in my new Connected Career, and it was the most fun one yet.
Season 1, Rookie FS for the Raiders. Our D was amazing all year. I ended the season with 6 picks, and won DRotY. But, our Defensive MVP was Matt Shaughnessy, DE. As a whole, our D was very similar to the Seattle D we saw this year. We made big plays at big times, and would bend but not break. We went 12-4, and won the Division. Like I said, I won DRotY at the end of the regular season, with Matt Shaughnessy winning Defensive MVP. We had a Wildcard bye, as the #2 seed. We played the Chiefs in the Divisional round, and we stomped them (we split the regular season series against them). Player of the game was Rolando McClain, who had a pick-6. In the AFC Championship, we faced the 10-6 Broncos, led by Manning. In a long, close game, we held them on the final drive to win by just 3 points. We intercepted Manning in the endzone with ~20 seconds left. DHB was player of the game. In the Super Bowl, we faced the Dallas Cowboys(11-5). I honestly thought, after beating the Broncos and surviving Jamaal Charles, that the Romo-led Cowboys would be easy to handle. I was wrong... In a defensive struggle, both the Cowboys offense and the Raiders couldn't do much with the ball. The score was 10-0 at the Half, Raiders, with the only touchdown being a 72 yard TD bomb to DHB. In the Second half, the Cowboys started to make little plays. It eventually led them down the field, where they were able to punch it in with Murray, and the score was 10-7 Raiders. As the 4th quarter ticked on, and the Raiders offense still stagnant, Romo had the ball with 2 minutes to go, only down by 3. The drive started slowly, with Romo making short passes. They got past midfield. It was 3rd and about 7, with ~45 seconds left and 1 TO for the Cowboys. Romo was in shotgun, alone. He snapped the ball, and we were in Cover 2 Sink. I (FS) had my half of the deep field blanketed, and everyone in our secondary covered their zones. No Cowboy was open. All of their routes ran to (the mid-deep) left sideline on my side. Nothing was there. Romo felt the pressure and began to scramble. He SOMEHOW broke 2 sacks, and kept scrambling. As our secondary tried to keep everyone covered (but only could for so long), somehow the FB snuck past all of us and got wide open, down the field. Romo launched it, and the FB caught it was rushing for the endzone. I barely caught up to him, stopping him at the 4 yard line with ~25-30 seconds left. The Cowboys rushed to the line, and my D audibled to a LB blitz. I came from the safety spot, taking out Murray in the backfield for a loss of 1 yard (to the 5 yard line). Romo again rushes his offense to the line, I stick with the blitz. He snaps it, and drops back to pass. I blanket Witten, and Romo tries a fade to Dez Bryant, but it is covered and the pass sails out of bounds. ~10 seconds left. I call out a Cover 3, and on 3rd and Goal, Romo drops back to pass again. He throws it to Dez again, right in my corner of the endzone, and I deflect the pass to force 4th down. With ~6 seconds left, the Cowboys tie the game 10-10 on the Field Goal, forcing OT in the Super Bowl. In Overtime, the Cowboys get the ball first, and we force 3-and-out. The Raiders offense doesn't do much again, and punts. There is now around 4 minutes left, and the Cowboys have the ball back at their 25. Again, Romo starts to slowly move down the field, only needing a FG to win the Super Bowl. Our D is getting worn out, and the Cowboys offense is slowly chipping away. The Cowboys got to midfield at the 2 minute warning. On the first play past the 2 minute warning, Romo hits Dez Bryant for a 9 yard gain, down to our 41 yard line, inching closer to FG range. Panic begins to set in for me. On the next play, Romo drops back and has time, and throws a pass to the middle of the field, right into my Cover 2! Rolando McClain intercepts the pass! We survive and stay alive! It was insane. Sparked by the miracle pick, our Offense gets to work with around 1:40 remaining. A few short pass to TJ Ford and DWB, and some rushes with RunDMC, and we are able to get Raider-great Sebastian Janikowski to kick the Super Bowl-winning FG. And he made it! We won! 13-10 in OT. I've played 40+ seasons in Connected Careers and won my share of Super Bowls, but none have ever been THIS fun. Playing on the Raider's D, where everyone contributes evenly and no one is outright the best on our squad is so much fun. Winning the Super Bowl in the manner we did was amazing, and the next season should be just as good.
Why So Serious?
Playing a Madden tournament at my cousin's house and he gets mad because I can somewhat do user picks. Ah well, payback for last week getting my butt kicked. Any thoughts?
