Calvinism vs the Bible: part 3
Reformed theology teaches that a person must be changed in some way (regenerated) before they can have faith:
According to Sproul, “One of the most dramatic moments in [his] life for the shaping of [his] theology took place in a seminary classroom. One of [his] professors went to the blackboard and wrote these words in bold letters: "Regeneration Precedes Faith."” (https://www.monergism.com/thethreshold/articles/onsite/sproul01.html).
Yet, there is no evidence in the Bible that supports this theory.
In Genesis, after ‘the fall’, Scripture records the following accounts:
“And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Ē´nosh. Then men began to call on the name of the LORD.”
Genesis 4:26 NKJV
“After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and daughters.
...
And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.”
Genesis 5:22, 24 NKJV
“Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.
...
But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.”
Genesis 6:5-6, 8-9 NKJV
There is absolutely no mention of any of these people needing to be changed in any way prior to them calling on God or walking with God.
In fact, taking Noah as an example, he FOUND grace/favour. If he had needed to be regenerated prior to finding grace, we would expect the Bible to read: ‘God GAVE grace/favour to Noah’. But it doesn’t. There is nothing to even suggest that God changed Noah in any way.
One needs to add to Scripture in order to support the theory that ‘regeneration precedes faith’.
In addition, if God knew that people needed to be ‘regenerated’ prior to seeking Him or doing what was right, why would God lament the ‘wickedness of mankind’ if they could not do any differently?
“And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.”
Genesis 6:6 NKJV
Why grieve their state if all it would take to change it was ‘regenerating’ them so that they would want to seek and obey Him?
Why would God regret creating mankind and why destroy them all in a flood rather than just ‘regenerate’ them?
The fact that God grieved this situation takes for granted that mankind had the ability to seek Him and put their faith in Him and did not need to be changed in any way.
To claim that ‘regeneration precedes faith’ is to make God insincere and untrustworthy.
Mankind continued in a state where we are able to seek God and respond to Him without needing to be changed first in any way.
Yes, the Holy Spirit draws, but the natural ability to respond and to have faith is present in every single person because we have all been made in God’s image.
