Hi Ms. Miller! I'm a huge fan of TSOA! How did you stay motivated to keep writing your book throughout the ten years, and was there any 'slammed/closed doors' in regard to your novel having a gay couple in it? Was it hard not having it be sold as a straight up LGBT+ book that would likely not even be sold in most bookstores? Thank you! And I hope you have another book in the works because I'd love to read it! :)

Hi, and thanks! What kept me motivated was always Patroclus.  Every time I would despair and start to give up, his voice and story would bring me back.  I felt compelled to give him his chance to speak.  The story was in my bones, and there was no out but through.  All my writing is that way--otherwise, I could never get through all the drudgery parts--the editing and re-editing and copy-editing and proof-reading, etc, etc.

In terms of having Patroclus and Achilles’ love at the center of the book, I have actually had a wonderful experience.  My lovely agent and editors both warned me that there might be some issues along the way, that at the very least I would get hate mail.  I can say that it has been a wonderful and joyous surprise how little of that there has been.  People have mostly been very welcoming both to the book and the characters.  

And thanks for the vote of confidence about the next book! I’m working hard.

I have major ADHD and SOA is the only book that has been able to keep me completely enthralled and unable to get distracted. Do you have any tips for writers(me) of how to keep the story fast paced but still descriptive so it never gets boring? <3

I’m going to steal from Elmore Leonard here, who says that readers never skip dialogue.  I think a conversation or an interaction can really jump start a slow scene.  Try reading your work outloud as well--that can reveal if something is dragging.  Finally, for me, it helps to have something to be driving towards--if the plot and characters are on a collision course with a particular event, moment, revelation.  That can help keep down digressions, and provide propulsion!
