They’d trained, trained and trained until they were blue in the face. Now, there was only so much they could and it had to involve putting feet on the ground and actually making a difference. The majority of the missions thus far had been avoiding a mess – they were a low payout mission and that meant that whatever they were dealing with usually involved a group willing to give up long before they had to use lethal force. This mission had been completely different, something she had hoped that the group of them would be ready for but it had all but slipped her mind that Wanda wasn’t a trained soldier like the other recruits had been. She was still a kid at heart just wanting to do the right thing.
Now sitting on the quinjet silence was so prominent every breath each person took could be heard. It was easy to notice the cracks in the brave face that Wanda wore, but no concern was voiced as they made it back to the compound and everyone left the carrier. The silence carried as each individual retired to their quarters and it was there in the dimly lit hallway that Natasha was able to catch sight of the blood splatter from the HYDRA agent who’d been seconds away from using his own lethal force on Wanda. While it had been the latter who’d sent the bullet into the man, it was the former who’d watch the shock cross his face and life leave his eyes.
A thick swallow as she moved a few steps faster to fall into pace with Maximoff, “Go get cleaned up and changed then we’ll find ourselves a couple of pints of ice cream. And I’ll even let you pick the movie we watch.“
Wanda wasn’t any sort of stranger to blood. Her blood, someone else’s blood. It didn’t matter about it getting on her, on her face even. Sometimes that was just what happened in a fight, in a protest, in living in your own damn home in the wrong time in a country’s history, and you had to power through until the end, take a shower, and hoped you could get enough sleep before the nightmares could catch up with you that first night.
But there was something different when the combat was face to face, so personal. She normally could hang pretty far back from the main fight, her magic letting her keep her distance. And everything about this fight had been too close for comfort, hell just whose blood was going to end up spilled felt like it had gotten too close for comfort. And god, she had never remembered someone else’s blood being so viscerally warm than when the HYDRA agent’s had hit her face. It had been such a shock to her system, she hadn’t even thought to wipe it off, just letting the red splatter dry there, only flaking away when she had to move her face, which she wasn’t doing much of while they flew home.
She wasn’t exactly lost in her own thoughts when Natasha came up beside her, but she wasn’t quite there either, so she gave a little jump when she spoke. “I,” she swallowed, nodding. Right. A shower. Get it off her. Out of her hair. “That sounds really good. I think I might want… a romcom tonight. Instead of horror.”
