Retirement Age of MP Judges Increased
On Thursday, 20 November, the Supreme Court issued an interim order increasing the retirement age of judicial officers in Madhya Pradesh from 60 to 61 years. The bench of Chief Justice B.R. Gavai, Justice Prasanna B. Varale, and Justice K. Vinod Chandran said that since the state government is itself willing to raise the age limit, judicial officers should also be granted this relief. The court also noted that other state government employees retire at 62, and both judiciary and other employees are paid from the same fund.
The bench further stated that since High Court judges retire at 62, increasing the retirement age of district judges to 61 is logical. However, senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, appearing for the Madhya Pradesh High Court, opposed the proposal. Earlier, on 27 October, the Supreme Court had sought responses from the state government and the High Court registry on this issue.
