DO NOT FRET, I am still doing Utakata Fort Night. Well, technically, I finished it, but I just may or may not have underestimated how difficult that song would be to translate. I don't feel like it's good enough to post yet, so I'm going to leave it for a little bit, and come back to it later with a clear head (and, hopefully, a stronger grasp on this language, lol).

I haven't watched this MV for a while. Seeing Urin here again... it makes me emotional. I remember this video being recommended to me and being so surprised when I saw Urin as if it were yesterday. I went to the Jpop Wiki so fast to make sure it was really her, and it was! Not to mention that the group is in the same agency AND under the same producer as MAD MEDiCiNE. But, I'll save the Urin tangent for when we get to 丑の刻参り (Ushi no Koku Mairi). I don't want this intro to get too intense.

That aside, Mazari keeps the title of being the most fun to translate. I don't know what it is about these lyrics, but, at this rate, if I don't control myself, this will be a Mazari-focused blog instead! Lol.

(Notes) *That’s not really what it translates to, but I think that’s what it’s supposed to mean, because, any other way, that line doesn’t make much sense.

*"Scatter" is not actually being repeated here, but I added the repetition to match up with the rest of the lines, because it just felt weird without it.

*I truly do not understand what さも is supposed to be doing here. I understand it means something along the lines of “like” or “as if” but I just can’t wrap my head around what that’s supposed to mean here.

Conclusions: I've always known what this song was about, but, sheesh, I didn't think the lyrics were this heavy. This song is about depression and probably suicidal thoughts. Even though suicide is never outright stated, not being upfront about those feelings is literally one of the themes of this song.

NEXT: After I've done the next two songs on my list, I wanna try and finish some of the songs I haven't finished. My entire Mazari megadoc is already formatted and I have a few other songs that are 90% done, but we'll see what gets done first, I guess. In the meantime, the next songs are 丑の刻参り (Ushi no Koku Mairi) and 絶対的オンリーガール (Zettaiteki Only Girl). These two songs will also mark the end of the no MAD MEDiCiNE/MADMED spree. Hey, four is pretty good, right?

For this one, I tried to figure out as much romaji as possible just by listening, without looking at JP lyrics. I wanted to improve my ability to hear Japanese, because Ningyou -Hitogata- completely humbled me and my dictionary. I did way better than I thought I would. I don’t know what else to say about this one. I really like this song, it’s kinda hypnotising, you know what I mean? It’s definitely my favourite song from the いちばん幸せな死に方。mini album.

Also, totally unrelated, but IM SO GLAD commencement didn't land on the day of or after MADMED's 24 hour livestream omg. I watched the full 24 hours proper because I have no life. No, that's wrong— idols ARE my life.

(Note) *ひとりきり means “all alone” or “all by oneself” but here it uses the character (孤). It doesn’t change the meaning at all, since the Kanji itself just means “solitude” (aka basically the same thing), but I’ve just never seen ひとりきり written that way and thought it was interesting.

CONCLUSIONS (I KEEP FORGETTING TO ADD THIS LMAO): If we're looking at it literally, it's about a puppet falling in love, but something tells me that this might be a metaphor for something else as well. Hm... mysterious. Personally, I'm reading this one as neglect, but I'm probably wrong.

I was always under the impression that anhedonia would be アン匕ドニア because of pronunciation but, lo and behold, I’m still stupid and wrong. What’s new? Pretty sure this song was the MADMED RAD JAM song, because this song came out of freaking nowhere I tell ya. Nowhere. I had never heard of this song being played at any live shows before RAD JAM. Not to mention that they had filmed a music video with a new song already and were just about to release it when this song came out. Anyways, this song is really good. I love the もう一回 parts where everything gets slightly muted and creepy. It feels so MADMED. I can’t explain it, but those parts kind of remind me of 独占悦楽少女.

*”Juice” is probably referring to cerebrospinal fluid. *I THINK??? I think that’s what 麻の花 means???? *Purpura (or blood spots) is a kind of rash that looks like a cluster of bruises. Unlike bruises, purpura are not caused by external injury, but, rather, they develop from within the body. *罹る means to be inflicted with an illness or to suffer from something, which implies that “rainbow covered cage” is actually a bad thing. But, the chorus right after says 連れてかないで モノクロームの世界へ, which implies that the rainbows are actually a good thing? I think that means that the “cage” is not actually covered in rainbows, but that the rainbows are just an illusion caused by the “medicine.” *NO, NOT AGAIN. WHAT IS 1g IN JP?????

Minzai typically means sleeping pills (眠剤), however, instead of using the character zai 剤, for medicine, the title uses the character tsumi 罪, which means sin or crime, but it can be pronounced the same way as zai 剤. The title is obviously a pun, but I’m unsure of how to translate it. I’ve left it as “Sleeping Pills” for simplicity's sake.

*The title, Dokusou, is composed of the kanji for poison, doku 毒, and funeral, sou 葬. I’ve looked everywhere, and I cannot figure out what this is supposed to mean. I don’t think it’s actually a word, and I can’t tell if it’s a pun on a word that actually exists either. So, I tried to make a cool-sounding English title using the meanings of the two Kanji.

FINAL THOUGHTS: I'd just quickly like to say that I’m so glad to see that, even without cutting down Jam’s screen time so drastically like they did in Magical Happy End, the other members all really stood out in this one! In retrospect, the special effects makeup was kind of genius. It makes everyone stand out effortlessly, but, of course, everyone’s performance is still a huge factor. They’ve definitely improved a ton! Keep it up, MADMED!!!

Now onto the fun part, the special effects makeup!! I have watched this video thousands of times now, so, even though I’m mad blind, I feel pretty confident in my judgements here. I also just really like yapping, as you already know, especially when it comes to MADMED.

ANALYSIS: All of the members "illnesses."

Ayame’s (top left) theme is very evident here. Though I’m unsure of her exact theme or what to call it, instead of tweeting “good morning” in the morning, she says “あやめざめ” or “妖メ覚メ” — Ayame awakening, in the sense of “opening one’s eyes.” She also sometimes adds the eye emoji to it as well. I’m pretty sure her name, 妖メ, means “demon eye”, so, having eyes growing from her skin, though simple compared to the rest, is a pretty good fit. And, of course, it’s just freaky.

Tenlu (top middle) is supposed to look like a mermaid. She said it on X. She has these bubble-like things growing out of her skin, and each patch of these bubbles is surrounded by shiny blue scales that fade in and out of her skin. She also has pointed ears. Compared to the rest, she has a cleaner look, which makes her look more ethereal. So, I guess Tenlu's "illness" is turning her into a mermaid.

For Tora (top right), it’s a bit more difficult to tell what’s going on. She has these cracks all over her body, and some parts have these yellow and pink (?) sections. To me, she kind of looks like a cracked statue, honestly, but I’m not 100% sure on that. Particularly, the coloured parts are what make me the most unsure. It could also be that her "illness" is just causing her to crumble away.

Numa (bottom left) is covered in what looks like green jewels. Most of her face also seems to have a green tint. Since her colour is very similar to the tint of the set, it’s actually really hard to tell what I'm looking at here. Nevertheless, I, Science McGee, strongly believe that this "illness" is crystallisation— the solidification of liquid into crytals. It's the same process that creates snowflakes!

Peco (bottom right) takes the form of a creepy doll, or a person who’s been stitched up to look like one. Her face and the sides of her mouth have stitches, which, when her mouth is closed, makes it look a little bit like it’s sewn shut. She also has bows literally sewn into her skin, which is actually a bit unsettling. Peco’s look is definitely one of the more terrifying ones. I'm thinking that her "illness" is either turning her into a doll, or it's animation (as in doll coming to life). It could also be something that requires her to be stitched up again and again, maybe similar for the crumble theory I came up with for Tora's? So many possibilities....

Last, but not least, is Jam (bottom middle). To be frank with you, even after watching this millions of times, I still do not have even an inkling of what this is supposed to be. At first, I thought she was an amalgamation of all of the member's “illnesses,” but now I’m not so sure, because I don’t really see any similarities to Numa's. She has these bright red spots and cracks on her face, and, on her arms, she has more of those cracks as well as these bumps on her skin that would look like blisters if not for the weird “crust” surrounding them. There’s also spikes growing out of her skin too. The most terrifying special effects makeup is between her and Peco, for sure.

I really do be doing anything but talking about the meaning of the songs vro 🥀. And that typo was NOT intentional by the way. Anyways, I'm gonna try to keep up with new MAD'S iNK releases as well as I can from this point onwards, prioritising MVs over digital releases so that I can actually have time to get old stuff finished in between. Basically, what I'm saying is that I'm gonna do Mazari's new song next.

The lyrics, the title, the mv, and even the album cover are incredibly cryptic, and, unlike the rest of Mazari's songs, I couldn't really figure out what it was roughly about just from the title and the little lyrics I was able to understand. I thought it was about the lost advertisement of the same name, but there's really nothing in the mv or the lyrics suggesting that.

Crypticness aside, this song is an absolute banger. And it was the most fun song to translate so far!

(Notes) *Hitogata is another reading for 人形 (ningyou), so the -ヒトガタ- in the title is basically just telling you how 人形 is being pronounced. On streaming services, they have the English release titled as Hitogata -Hitogata-, which, though it is probably the more correct way of transliterating the title, it’s, admittedly, a little bit funny. It’s a perfect example of things kind of getting lost in translation (or, in this case, transliteration). To minimise that kind of “lost in translation” phenomenon, I’m leaving the romaji title as Ningyou -Hitogata- even though it’s incorrect.

*No idea what any of this means, lmfao. I think it's just word salad. Or, rather, Kanji salad.

*technically, this is supposed to be "so I don't scratch at my throat" but I think it's supposed to link back to the previous line about wrapping hair around the neck, so I decided that "bindings around the throat" would make more sense.

*I actually can't tell which reading of 紅 Homura-chan sings (or rather, screams) here. It sounds like beni to me, but I'm really terrible at hearing people in general, much less deciphering black metal screams in a whole other language.

*the repetition of 義肢 (gishi) here sounds a lot like the onomatopoeia for a squeaky or creaking sound, which is キシキシ (kishikishi). This is why I decided to repeat “creaking” rather than “prosthetic.”

Conclusion: I thought translating this song would make it easier to understand, but... actually I'm even more confused now. This conclusion business is really going terribly isn't it? I have some very loose ideas from the inclusion of the song Kagome Kagome and some of the Kanji salad at the beginning. There are a few different ideas as to what the song Kagome Kagome means, but, interestingly, two theories are that the song is about pregnancy or prostitution. Some of the lines in this song definitely line up with those interpretations, but there's even more lines that make me unsure about whether or not it's really what the song is about. It could also be about a living doll, where "Father" and "Mother" means, like "Maker" or perhaps even about a persons soul being shoved into a doll. Really, I don't know. There's so many things this could be. Or maybe I'm just daft— that's a possibility too.

Anyways, yeah. 初めてのRAD JAMおめでとう！

*I don’t know what “overalls” is supposed to mean here or what kind of significance it holds in this song, but I found that overalls are considered “work clothes.” *手切れ or 手が切れ can mean to break off a bond or to break up with a significant other. The phrase used here 手を切れ literally means cut one’s hands, which probably actually means “cut one’s wrist” judging by the next line. The reason why they used 手 instead of 手首, which was used in the next line, was either to fit the melody, or to be a pun about 手切れ and 手が切れ. *推し is a wota term, used for the idol, actor, or celebrity that you like the most. Your “favourite,” in other words. I’m not aware if there’s an equivalent term to this in English, so I just used “favourite person,” which does sound a little bit strange, but whatever. *セイシ could be so many freaking things. There’s like fifty different terms with this exact reading in my dictionary and I have no idea which one it is. This line does not have enough in it for me to make a confident guess, but I tried. Honestly, I had the same problem with アイ here too, so I’m not confident with that one either. I think it’s likely that this line is supposed to be a pun of sorts. *The use of 吐いた instead of 吹いた, the latter of which would probably (?) make more sense here, leads me to believe that this phrase, 「シャボン玉吐いた」, actually means “foaming at the mouth,” which is a symptom of drug overdose. The symptom can actually present itself in any drug overdose, but most online sources talk about opioids and narcotics in specific.

Final Thoughts: Deep down, I knew that translating the work of a Vocaloid producer like LadyMonsters was a bad idea, but I was undeterred and I did it. It’s probably not good at all, but it was worth a shot. Plus, I just really like this song, so I wanted an excuse to talk about it. Heh.

Yet, another song that I can flex my medical knowledge (slightly). Anhedonia was still the best one in that regard, though. Speaking of, the next song I'm doing is アシストール, and I have a lot to say about that one, so... prepare yourself for a mega long rant when that one comes out, lmao.

This was the beginning of MADMED's MVs looking like movies. Sometimes I forget they're underground idols because of how beautifully filmed these are. It's seriously crazy how much these MVS have improved since Minzai. I love MADMED, so much. Also, they released the cut version of their 24 hour livestream a few days ago. Ugh, they're so cute!! I know I watched it before but... I just love them too much!

*えーん is an onomatopoeia for crying, so in this line it’s less like telling you to stop crying, but more like mocking you. Like, “cut it out with your ‘wah-wah’-ing!” but I wanted to put more emphasis on the mocking here.

*蛙化 is probably referring to 蛙化現象 (literally, frogification phenomenon), a slang term which is essentially equivalent to the English slang term “ick.”

Conclusions: This is pretty much a classic Yandere song. Also, I find it interesting how the men are depicted as rabbits in this mv. At first, I thought it was just because the mv was released on Easter, but, after thinking about it some more, It's kind of brilliant. Rabbits mate a lot right, so I thought that it could be a way of depicting the man as a person who can't resist temptation, hence the line そっちはダメ 誘惑がいっぱい. Also, rabbits are prey, so it could also be a way of saying that the man is powerless. Pretty interesting.
