max calling will while he’s in lenora, slowly opening up about her depression and finding it easier to talk to him since she couldn’t see his face. they got closer that way. will never came out to her but she slowly realized over time and kept reminding him that he could tell her anything and that she loves him no matter what.

will feels guilty over max’s coma because he somehow feels like he should have been able to get her out of her depression so vecna couldn’t target her. he visits her without lucas and the party sometimes. not out of guilt but out of love. he comes out to her then because he knows she can’t hear him. he apologizes and cries all the time, begging her to come back because he misses his best friend.

will and max study together and become each other’s support system during junior and senior year. he helps her pass her classes and they continue to bind face to face, grateful to have one another. will is the first person she thanks after graduation.
