You can tell a lot about a person from their hands...
After Leandra's death, Mael quits drinking entirely. It makes the Hanged Man less fun, but he figures he's better off not drinking at all when there's always a temptation to go overboard. That being said, Mael's the sort of person to find a way to be a little shit no matter what he's doing so here's some shenanigans he gets into as a direct result of not drinking.
Ordering increasingly goofy and childish drinks at every bar he enters. You've never seen a bartender so confused as when the Champion of Kirkwall orders the Thedosian equivalent of chocolate milk.
He always has a wild story for why he doesn't drink. Most popular one right now is that he was cursed by a buzzkill wizard.
Whenever he's at a fancy party and the host is rude to his friends he can just pour whatever drinks they hand him into their expensive potted plants for some slow burn vengeance.
Being the designated sober person means you can remember all the stupid shit your friends do while drunk and Mael has a lot of friends who do a lot of stupid things.
After a lifetime of hiding his magic and getting into altercations in crowded city centers where maybe calling down lightning is not a fantastic idea, Hawke's gotten pretty damn good at fighting with a spear, polearm, staff, or even just his hands. Watch a Templar block his magic and get fucking blindsided when Hawke judo throws his ass into the pavement.
mael and mercutio if they ever met would be very good friends and everyone else would Suffer
One of Mael's sort of stand-out character traits is how much pressure he puts on himself to be exactly what everyone else needs. A breadwinner, perfect son, supportive friend, comic relief... he tries so hard to fill the gap that Malcolm left in his family. It doesn't really work, and trying to fix everything definitely doesn't help his strained relationship with Carver.
rush tackle them to the ground. [flings ellie at hawke bc hugs are required]
Mael catches Elena and twirls her around. He's not about to be bowled over by someone so much smaller than he. Mael sets her down with a flourish. "Such theatrics, my dear. You would almost think we are related," he teases. Then his expression turns soft. "It's wonderful to see you, cousin. I only wish that Mother could have met you too."
*mael voice* isabela is a trashy bitch and I could not possibly respect her more
