Historical AU (OMG yes to Jane Austen!)
A solitary man was Mr. Baggins, with his estate up the hill and rumored to be in possession of good fortune.
Rumored, however, for while many a Lady had rode up his neat lane in carriages, clothed in her best dress and accompanied by either her mother, a sister or a brother – if, for some, not all – none had been allowed into the estate.
Mr. Baggins was sick. Mr. Baggins was otherwise occupied. Mr. Baggins was out hunting.
Mr. Baggins was not in want of a wife and it baffled the little town he had taken residency in.
It did not, however, baffle one Mr. Durin – Fili, older brother and heir to a fortune greater than even that of Mr. Baggins.
Mr. Durin had known Mr. Baggins for many years and a frequent visitor to the manor. Great friends they were – nothing more, nothing less or so the rumors said – and he was aware of Mr. Baggins’ reasons for being single and staying that way, no matter his good fortune.
For Mr. Durin himself was not in want of a wife either, and both himself and Mr. Baggins were quite happy to spend their time in each other’s company.
Playing chess and reading books, or so the rumors said.
