Mag 7, The Piper. I love this episode so much. One of my favorite things about TMA is how in incorporates real life history. Gives me a little kick every time I see a historical figure I recognize from TMA in my history textbook
“He told me it had three faces. One to play its pipes of scrimshawed bone, one to scream its dying battle cry and one that would not open its mouth, for when it did blood and sodden soil flowed out like a waterfall. Those arms that did not play the pipes were gripping blades and guns and spears, while others raised their hands in futile supplication of mercy, and one in a crisp salute.”
Posting like it’s 2016 again. Something something Billy rocks being the black owl that haunts Goody. Maybe he’s the actual angel of death and is checking out the guy that got his nickname during the war au??? Idk I want more magical gays
Six years after first listening to The Magnus Archives I did my first fan art of one of my favorite episodes - The Piper! This is Wilfred Owen writing in the trench :3
I might do more in the future... I hope you like it!
-guy hears music in the war and it makes him feel Emotion. what else is there to say.
-although to be fair. this is him thinking back on something that happened shortly before he thought he saw his friend die. remembering hearing ominous music in the distance before you see something traumatic sounds pretty normal.
-friend-guy 'met the war'. the war is the height of the average soldier. has 3 faces: one for playing pipes, one for screaming, one for spitting out blood and spoil. arms are playing the pipes/holding weapons/raising arms in surrender/saluting. <-fantastic character design, someone get this guy a job as a comic book artist
-guy said he'd have to live to 'play the piper's tune', which. he's a soldier. he's probably gonna kill people, if that's what that means.
-statement giver sees soldiers who look like they're hearing music (whatever that might look like)-- those soldiers always die
-wilfred fought so well it ~must have been supernatural~. and his shadow was spooky.
-same day wilfred died, the peace treaty was signed. implied connection is that the piper marked him so that he could only live so long as the war was ongoing.
post-statement:
-Jon recognizes the name Joseph Rayner (dead soldier in the statement) but doesn't know where he knows it from
listening to my first actual run-through of tma i am full of spoilers
i just finished MAG 12 i might make this a reblog chain on my side account just with my reactions and guesses for horror(s) are represented after each episode so here are my thoughts so far
MAG 1 - strong start, definitely tells me what kinda ride i’m in for. absolutely adore the little michael The Door foreshadowing at the end. i originally thought this was a stranger one, but it’s probably a spiral the more i think about it.
MAG 2 - the second i heard the word “money,” i immediately went “buried” and wouldn’t you know it, i was right.
MAG 3 - graham got stranger-ed guess he’s not!graham now. i get beholder/eye vibes from the story itself, though, like she had to know what was happening to him.
MAG 4 - VAST VAST VAST first indications of mike!! and gerry is there too, i guess, hi gerry.
MAG 5 - lots of things but honestly?? eye. the teeth freaked me out, though.
MAG 6 - no comment, just grossed out, corruption is terrifying to me.
MAG 7 - ok, this one seems like something i’d write. it’s so cool, i love it so much, the piper is such a vibe, it’s gonna be so hard to draw, definitely end or slaughter.
MAG 8 - classic desolation episode, more ghosts and fire please.
MAG 9 - original thought was slaughter, but now i’m thinking dark. love that robert’s just a dad trying to look out for this daughter, even though he’s a mass murderer, more of this dynamic in media.
MAG 10 - vampires read as hunt to me, loved the description of the tongue being more like a leeches than a humans, really sets the vibe.
MAG 11 - prophetic dreams are so fun, i don’t care how overused they are. originally thought eye or desolation, but it was revealed to me that this is an end episode. thanks google, i just wanted a reference for the veins, i didn’t need the fandom wiki for oliver banks.
MAG 12 - desolationnnnn liminal hospital setting is such a good place for a desolation episode, also gerry’s here i guess. hi gerry, thanks for letting me know that your eye tattoos are not just a collective fandom thing, you’re gonna make practicing anatomy a lot harder.
the magnus archives doodle dump... NO SPOILERS PLEASE 🙏 im only on ep45

Clown Doll (as seen in MAG24)

Death (as seen in MAG29)
...and mild spoilers
warning! some things will definitely be inaccurate, as im only 1/4 through the series as i mentioned
MAG2's description of breekon and hope, the "red-faced deliverymen". i'd later learn they were "exactly how you'd expect them to look", so i kind of imagine they look like Mogens from Klaus. or at least one of them hypothetically would.
at the time, while i knew their red faces were from exhaustion, i wanted to draw them with actual red faces. because it was cool!
you may notice i drew them with subtle fish-like features in some places (particularly the mouths), which was because i assumed they were throwaway characters.
and if they were, that'd imply they were more connected to the siren they delivered in the box, so...
MAG7, the piper. i hope i didn't phone it in too hard, because this one's my favourite episode so far.
i can't draw the sides of peoples' heads when they're screaming, so one of the three heads looks a little stupid...
to me, some of the wording in the episode implies that the Piper's tune is one we know of in real life- especially considering how the statement is in-universe written by a real guy, and heavily discusses another.
and so i want to add to this that i strongly believe that the tune is the famous british-and-then-american military song, "Yankee Doodle". it dates to over 250 years ago, and there's a pretty iconic rendition of that song that primarily features a pipe instrument, too.
spooked me a little when i realised how possible this was
gerry! not too much to say here, i guess. i don't know how common this is, but black gerry just kind of spoke to me. to my knowledge he's a pretty major player in the story, so i'm almost certain i've fucked up his design somehow... oh well. c'est la vie.
that stupid clown doll. i joked to my friends that it was doing that one ishowspeed face, and then i couldn't get it out of my head...
michael, another major player. had some advice from my friends for this one. couldn't tell you why, but him having mysterious little glasses really adds to his vibes for me.
sorry that his little distortion form is so lazy. didn't really know what to do with it, lol
and last but most certainly not least, the monk version of death we saw. even though this guy isn't THE death (there doesn't seem to be 'a' death), the monk outfit is easily one of my favourite designs of a skeletal grim reaper. it adds a lot.
but thank you for reading all of this! or just looking at the doodles... i don't mind.
the alt text descriptions of the Piper and Death feature copy pasted quotes from this series of fanmade transcripts. thank you for that.
...
...?
oh, right. one more thing.
there is a wasp's nest in my attic.
