Episode twenty nine, Cheating Death. This is my second favorite TMA episode (my favorite one will be coming up in May, probably). It's so fucking cool. I loved this podcast already when I first listened to this one, but Cheating Death solidified this as my current favorite thing.

Hello, Gerry and Michael (Shelley) probably never met in canon as Gerry started working with Gertrude in 2013, and Michael died/became the Distortion at some point before 2011

I was already tempted to ship them because opposing aesthetics and a mutual hatred of Gertrude

but then they were both dead and I'm sad and if drawing fanart of my dead sons in a meadow talking about how much they hate Gertrude is what I need to not be sad then drawing I will go

To be fair impossible ships aren't even a first for me in this fandom, within a few days I had decided that Joshua Gillespie from MAG 2 (Guy who gave no shits about an empty coffin he just... Got one day) and Nathaniel Thorp from MAG 29 (Guy who cheated death and became immortal and also is illiterate) would make a lovely couple

I have yet to draw fanart of them but I will, all of them

warning! some things will definitely be inaccurate, as im only 1/4 through the series as i mentioned

MAG2's description of breekon and hope, the "red-faced deliverymen". i'd later learn they were "exactly how you'd expect them to look", so i kind of imagine they look like Mogens from Klaus. or at least one of them hypothetically would. at the time, while i knew their red faces were from exhaustion, i wanted to draw them with actual red faces. because it was cool! you may notice i drew them with subtle fish-like features in some places (particularly the mouths), which was because i assumed they were throwaway characters. and if they were, that'd imply they were more connected to the siren they delivered in the box, so...

MAG7, the piper. i hope i didn't phone it in too hard, because this one's my favourite episode so far. i can't draw the sides of peoples' heads when they're screaming, so one of the three heads looks a little stupid... to me, some of the wording in the episode implies that the Piper's tune is one we know of in real life- especially considering how the statement is in-universe written by a real guy, and heavily discusses another. and so i want to add to this that i strongly believe that the tune is the famous british-and-then-american military song, "Yankee Doodle". it dates to over 250 years ago, and there's a pretty iconic rendition of that song that primarily features a pipe instrument, too. spooked me a little when i realised how possible this was

gerry! not too much to say here, i guess. i don't know how common this is, but black gerry just kind of spoke to me. to my knowledge he's a pretty major player in the story, so i'm almost certain i've fucked up his design somehow... oh well. c'est la vie.

that stupid clown doll. i joked to my friends that it was doing that one ishowspeed face, and then i couldn't get it out of my head...

michael, another major player. had some advice from my friends for this one. couldn't tell you why, but him having mysterious little glasses really adds to his vibes for me. sorry that his little distortion form is so lazy. didn't really know what to do with it, lol

and last but most certainly not least, the monk version of death we saw. even though this guy isn't THE death (there doesn't seem to be 'a' death), the monk outfit is easily one of my favourite designs of a skeletal grim reaper. it adds a lot.

but thank you for reading all of this! or just looking at the doodles... i don't mind. the alt text descriptions of the Piper and Death feature copy pasted quotes from this series of fanmade transcripts. thank you for that.

pre-statement:

--STATEMENT--

-statement is being verbally dictated to someone to write, we don't know who yet

-way back when, there was a soldier in the revolutionary war. he died.

-he meets death and challenges death to a game

-death gives him 3 options and he says 'none of the above, we're playing Faro'

-soldier cheats

-death knows he cheated, but is happy the soldier won

-soldier's skin starts falling off. now he's a spooky scary skeleton.

-statement giver tells the person writing his statement for him "Watch this :)" and then the page is covered in a large bloodstain

-statement taker found whatever he did Really Spooky

-implied that he stabbed himself

-him and other Death guys don't only visit people who've died, they also actively kill people

-Death people automatically know how to play every game perfectly

-when someone wins a game against death they become death, but that doesn't kill the prior death. It only gives them their flesh back. makes them permanently immortal.

post-statement:

-the blood stain is real

-details on Nathaniel Thorp were verified for the time he made the statement, no modern day details on this guy could be found

-Fiona Law took this statement, she died after 'complications during a liver transplant'

-seems like he's listing Gertrude Robinson as one of the two people? my guy. you know she's dead. you've said that she's dead before.

-other person is Elias. he checked with Elias, Elias remembers the spooky statement. Elias remembers everyone talking about the guy who cut off his finger while making a statement.

-'small hexagonal token' made out of old bone was included with the statement. when Jon picked it up it 'crumbled to dust'. nice job Jon. you destroyed the one piece of evidence this guy had. smh we need The Magnus Institute to hire a museum artifact curator who knows how to work with delicate old materials.
