A thing I love about Gertrude Robinson:
Though she is technically an Avatar of the Eye (per her job contract and her supernatural abilities), she is fundamentally a "pandeific" being.
We get reminded over and over and over how aligned she is with other entities.
The Web:
Annabelle Cane in MAG147, "The Weaver"
Gertrude Robinson, described by Michael in MAG101, "Another Twist"
Gertrude Robinson, talking to Arthur Nolan in MAG145, "Infectious Doubts"
Let's continue with those two episodes--she's Desolation and Spiral as well as Web
MAG145:
(not to mention that she survived binding herself to Agnes, and during that ritual her "lungs try to burn [her] alive from the inside out," and that she just overall has quite an affinity for fire and explosions)
MAG101
Eric Delano confirms her willingness to lie as well in MAG154
The Dark
The common symbol of The Dark (or at least Maxwell Raynor's cult) is a closed eye; in hiding from Elias, she too takes on that aspect of the Dark
MAG054, "Still Life"
The Lonely
This one, Jon says outright in MAG167, "Curiosity"
The Corruption
And I think that leads to her affinity with the more "metaphysical" aspects of the Corruption. This one doesn't have as obvious evidence, but understanding that the Corruption covers toxic relationships (MAG160.02), relationships where one being is used up by another, then what else characterizes even her most positive and genuine relationship?
(MAG111 "Family Business" and MAG137 "Nemesis")
That covers 7 out of the 14. I gotta think more about the last 7, but she definitely became enmeshed in so many parts of the Fears
"Oh… oh…. oh, Archivist. What have you done now? It’s almost sad to see you like this... almost."
MAG101: Another Twist
that’s how it went right
do you ever just. listen to a tma episode and then some lines being said here are describing you better than you ever could yourself
Ah yes, I too have many muffled feelings, Jon.
finally got around to finishing this mag101 comic i sketched out a few months ago!!transcript:
man michael shelley’s story is just so heartbreaking
i’ve been thinking abt how jonah magnus chooses people who are cut off frm the rest of the world, people who don’t have family or friends outside of the institute. people who won’t be missed or searched for. and michael shelley was probably no different, which means the archives was very likely the closest thing that he had to a family
and when you think about that in association to what happened to him... jesus. emma harvey kept him in the dark about the danger that he was in as a servant to the eye, about the existence of avatars and by extension. she concealed the truth about the entire world, and about everyone michael thinks he knows. and she did it all just for a laugh
gertrude robinson knew that emma was doing this to michael. and she let her. even before killing him, gertrude had already cemented this mental image of michael shelley as nothing more than something that could be of potential use. and that’s all that he ended up being. he cared about gertrude, admired her even, and from the very start, even before choosing him as a sacrifice, michael meant absolutely nothing to gertrude robinson
it’s safe to assume that this group of people was like a found family, the same way the new archival crew was. we only hear the original michael speak once but it’s so clear that he’s seeking gertrude’s approval, and that makes me believe gertrude was definitely something like a mother to michael. and that just makes his fate all the more heart-wrenching. especially when you realize that gertrude knew and understood exactly what was going to happen to michael shelley when he stepped through that door
