President-elect Donald Trump can be sentenced Friday in his New York hush money case, the Supreme Court said in a 5-4 ruling.

By a narrow margin, Trump got a spanking from SCOTUS.

The court refused to block Trump's sentencing on 34 felony counts in the Stormy Daniels hush money case in New York.

The high court on Thursday rejected Trump’s emergency request to delay the proceeding, setting the stage for him to be sentenced just days before he is inaugurated on January 20 for a second term. Four conservative justices – Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh – said they would have granted Trump’s request. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett joined the court’s three liberals to side against Trump. Judge Juan Merchan, the New York judge who oversaw Trump’s trial, had ordered sentencing in the case for Friday morning but has signaled that Trump will face neither penalties nor prison time. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for Friday at 9:30 a.m. Trump will appear virtually, according to a person familiar with the plans, joining the proceedings from Mar-a-Lago.

Sadly, Trump won't end up in prison. But the sentencing this morning makes him a full-fledged convicted felon in New York.

Das ist schon sehr problematisch; wir haben da einen ehemaligen Präsidenten, der es nicht sein lassen kann, zu lügen, zu betrügen, sich an seinen Mitmenschen abzureagieren, anderen die Schuld für Dinge zu geben, die eindeutig er verbrochen hat. Das viel interessantere Problem ist aber; wie kann es sein, dass es soviele Menschen gibt, die noch immer auf ihn hereinfallen? Sind die einfach alle so dumm, dümmer, am dümmsten oder fallen sie einfach auf seine Versprechen herein, von denen er kein einziges je wird einlösen können?

A city in the state of Washington got rid of a QAnon mayor the old school way – through grassroots organizing.

(Now former) Mayor William Armacost of Sequim is a stereotypical MAGA conspiracy fanatic who is as dumb as Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) and bombastic as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA-14).

After several years of Armacost, even many local conservatives were getting tired of him. So an unusual coalition of moderate conservatives and progressives banded together to form the Sequim Good Governance League (SGGL). The SGGL methodically recruited, supported, and elected city council members and other local officials; the margins of victory were HŪGE. SGGL-backed council members on January 11th ousted Armacost from the mayor’s office. 

There are two electoral lessons from this anti-MAGA revolt:

Grass-roots organizing is essential. Buying Facebook ads, sending out loads of emails, and putting out long boring policy papers don’t win elections. You need to talk to people one on one — and do twice as much listening as you do talking. Show people you don’t have horns and a pitchfork and incorporate their valid concerns into your campaign message.

Candidates must appeal to a relatively broad mix of the local population. Preaching to a select choir which always agrees with you might help you win some political purity awards but won’t get the votes you need to win. Most hotly contested elections require coalitions of some type to assure victory.
