Maggie Garcia was the epitome of hope punk
Thinking a lot about the Newsflesh series by Mira Grant (@seananmcguire) this morning and for the longest time Maggie slid under my radar. Sure I loved her like I tend to fall in love with all of McGuire's characters but the Masons and Buffy and Alaric were really the ones I was most interested in during my read through of the trilogy.
But the more distance I get from the series, the bleaker our real world becomes, the more I admire Maggie. Maggie was fierce when she needed to be but the way that I read her is primarily soft. Of all the characters, she is the least combat capable, the least field worthy. She d oesnt bring a brilliant analytical mind, technical savvy, or braindead courage to the team, like Georgia, Buffy, or Shaun do, respectively. Rather, she brings a safe haven. A warm place to rest and recuperate from the dangers of a post Rising world. And even when she is emotionally heated, even when she disagrees with her team or her team's actions, there is a softness behind her fierceness. Maggie combats the despair of the Rising and the Rising 2.0 by pouring love and kindness and compassion into a world that is anything but.
And I think that's pretty amazing. Maybe I'm not saying this very articulately but I just have a lot of feelings about Maggie today.
