So, in honor of midsummer and the summer solstice I’ve teamed up with @witches-of-ouroboros and will be posting some seasonal witchy libations! First off is the most time consuming component of one of my cocktails, an infusion for summer vodka. Really it can be made or drank anytime if you have the ingredients and the time.

Supplies: rose petals and buds, chamomile, and elderflower, vodka, and a Mason jar. The amount of each varies depending on the size of the Mason jar, but for the purpose of my example, I will be using an 8oz Mason jar.

Clean the jar well, even if it’s new. Hot water, soap, more hot water until all the soap is gone, and because I’m me, I pour a little vodka, and a splash of absinthe and swirl this all through the jar an lid both to give a final disinfection and, the absinthe adds a little more magical oomph. But absinthe is a topic for another day;)

I measured my dried* roses about a third if the way in the jar. Next a heaping tablespoon of chamomile, and another of elderflower. I added another few rose buds so it was just below the halfway point. Top with vodka until you get a little bit below the rim! Close tightly and shake once a day for the next 5-7 *dried flowers and herbs infuse faster and use up less space than fresh. If you have access to a large amount of fresh, food safe flowers and herbs for your infusions, have at it!

Almost forgot, taste it after five days and see if you want it stronger. It should have a delicate but noticeable flavor. Strain and store in a clean jar.

Roses have had their fair share in the histories and cultures. Used in love spells, prosperity and other rituals, the focus and intent of roses actually comes from a Greek legend concerning Aphrodite, the rose was created when the foam of the sea fell off her naked form, and her tears dyed the roses red. The rose represents a duality in love. Love of self, and love of another. New love and lost love.

Elderflowers are used to relieve emotional burdens and that feeling of being stuck, creating joy, and inviting prosperity and health into your life.

Chamomile is added for purification, prosperity and tranquility.

Roses are associated with water, vodka with earth, elderflower with the sun, and chamomile with fire.

Hey all, I’ve got an actual cocktail recipe for you today centered around the summer solstice/Litha on June 21st!

This is an original recipe. Sun Seeker Cocktail 2 oz bourbon 1 tbslp honey 3 oz ginger beer (refrigerated) Cinnamon stick Grater or microplane Sprig of rosemary

In a mixing glass pour bourbon and add honey. Stir until honey is dissolved and fully incorporated. Add ice and shake to chill. In a copper mug or lowball glass, pour ginger beer and strain bourbon honey mix into glass. Grate cinnamon over the top. Press rosemary to release oils, and rub around rim of glass (counter clockwise to reverse negativity) and place sprig in glass for garnish. Sip and feel the refreshing warmth deep through you and enjoy!

Whiskey for fire, rosemary for the sun, cinnamon for the warmth of summer, ginger for its healing and deep roots.

Today’s witch cocktail for the solstice is another original. It can only be done if you’ve made the rose floral vodka I shared last week. Here The Rose of Verona 2 oz Rose Vodka 1 oz simple syrup* Grapefruit (or lemon) sparkling water Garnish can be cucumber and rose (I added mint because I can) or, a lemon twist Mix simple syrup and rose vodka in a glass with ice, stir, don’t shake. Strain into martini glass and top with grapefruit sparkling water. Garnish and serve.

*If you don’t have simple syrup, take about 2 oz water and add in 4 barspoons or 4 teaspoons of powdered sugar and stir until dissolved.

It’s a simple but elegant cocktail, super refreshing and will taste almost like a floral iced tea with some bubbles. No burn or bite of alcohol.

I mentioned the herbal correspondences of the vodka, but adding citrus is the final step. Like in Yule, oranges, lemon, and grapefruit represent the sun. And as the longest day of the year, a little extra sun is needed for the cocktail.

Blood orange syrup for witchcraft and cocktail magic! So, I make magical cocktails, not saying that they're just super delicious (even though they are) I mean that cocktails at their base level, are a potion, an herbal tincture, a magical distillation. I'll make a post a bit later that's more in depth on cocktail magic but for now, the process. Blood oranges are now in season and I grabbed some the other day from my local farmers market. If you're wondering why oranges in witchcraft, it's simple. Oranges represent the sun, they are connected with authority, fire, warmth and the spring and summer seasons. They have implicit connection to day time workings, and with relationships. Add in the aspect that blood oranges have red pulp, they bring in a slightly different aspect to color connections. Red represents authority, passion, power and love. This amplifies the aspects that oranges naturally have and make a really tastey addition to your witch's repertoire. To make the syrup, Mix equal parts fresh squeezed juice and sugar in a sauce pan. Heat on low and stir constantly for about 10 minutes. As you stir, you'll notice the spoon moves a bit slower as it thickens and white frothy swirls will start to appear. When it starts to boil even with you stirring constantly, take it off the heat and stir an addition minute to help cool it down. Let cool before putting into a container. Keep in the fridge and use within a week* You can use it for a self love, empowerment, winter blues buster or whatever you'd like. Make a simple spell soda by adding the syrup to sparkling water for focus and to welcome the change of seasons. Up your mimosa game and top with this for a self love Sunday. Take control with an empowerment cocktail. *If you don't think you'll get through you're syrup in a week, add in a little vodka as a preservative. I added .75 oz vodka into this 1.5 cup after it cooled. It'll keep in the fridge for about a month if you do this, and the amount of vodka is minimal per serving.

Self-Empowerment Cocktail Spell

I’m calling this the “Seer Sucker Supervisor”

2 oz Bourbon or whiskey 1 oz Blood Orange syrup 2 dashes Tart Cherry Bitters Shake over ice until ice is dissolved and strain into a coupe or lowball glass (If you don’t have cherry bitters, use angostura bitters and garnish with a luxardo cherry)

Optional, top with tonic.

Oranges represent the sun and power, whiskey and bourbon connect to fire, passion and creativity. Cherries are for love and dedication. Ice is to keep your cool, and strained so you don’t appear cold.

Exude the calm confidence it takes to wear a seer sucker suit, with the control and level headedness of a boss.
