Someone’s been watching too much Willy Wonka.
Can I just talk for a moment about Summon the Keeper?
It's a book by Tanya Huff, and in this book there's an old elevator from the 1930's or 40's. It's broken down originally, but they repair it and hop on to see if it works. First it takes them to a tropical beach where they are ALMOST EATEN BY A KRAKEN. The next floor takes them to the BRIDGE OF THE STARSHIP ENTERPRISE. The third floor takes them to the inside of a volcano where a LIZARD COUPLE ARE ARGUING OVER WHO WILL COOK A 12-YEAR OLD FOR DINNER. So, in short, there's an elevator in this book that is basically a hotel equivalent of a universe-traveling Tardis. And the elevator is just one part! There's also a singing, talking bust of Elvis, a gateway to Hell that has a personality and talks to itself, and an apothecary to the left of reality. HOW DOES NO ONE KNOW ABOUT THIS BOOK?
