Magic HC-Cantrips
Headcanon of what are cantrips and expanding on them within the Spiral Stories Universe.
HC
Cantrips are a type of magic that isn't used within a fighting situation nor is healing magic. These spells do use mana but the amount needed is so small that it's barely noticed by the magic-user.
One of the first cantrips wizards learn is a sending spell. This allows the magic-user to send a small object to another person that has given them permission. This is most commonly used to send letters between magic-users.
A bit of a more complex cantrip is teleportation. This cantrip requires a series of classes to properly learn, and magic-users found to be attempting to teleport without attending the classes (at least within Ravenwood) are subject to detention and other academic penalties. The last lesson, and how Ravenwood staff determine if a student has completed the appropriate classes, is the creating of a teleportation mark that allows the magic-user to teleport to that same spot.
While those two cantrips are leaning into the functionality of cantrips, magic-users do use the magic for more cosmetic things. Levitating an object or, for more skilled magic-users, even levitating themselves is a common cantrip wizards like to use, especially students.
Thoughts/Thought Process:
In-Game Translations/Explanations:
For the most part, cantrips in-universe and in-game are pretty similar, except making it so they cost mana instead of energy since that just didn't really make sense to me personally. The sending cantrip is my in-universe translation of whispering to others since I didn't really like my original thought process of "literally another voice popping into the person's head". Something about it made me uncomfortable.
Final Thoughts:
Did I want Emily to be able to do more stereotypical wizardry stuff and to be able to do stuff when she's in her wolf form? Yes, and cantrips were the best thing I could add on to. I'm gonna do some actual drawing soon so hopefully I'll finally continue working out shadow magic.
