magic-owl said re: the Amazon series and what we might get/not get:
I found what was basically a Sparknotes Silmarillion on AO3 and was finally able to at least grasp the concept of the story and I’m excited for Hot!Sauron on the show, oh boy, this’ll be fun! I want them to do a plot twist by like revealing him but not giving his name right away so we’re like “hmm I wonder who that handsome smith is— oh waIT SHI—” The only thing I’m sad about the show is that Second Age means we won’t get the Beren and Luthien story, which (yea call me a sap) is my favorite xD
I’m guessing you found The Silmarillion Rewrite by Jenavira, which I ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO GET INTO SILM FANDOM BUT CAN’T MAKE IT THROUGH THE NOVEL. The Ainulindale is a tough start to The Silmarillion, so I love that fic as a much more upbeat, less dry and esoteric version of the story! You can’t take it 100% literally, it’s interpreting stuff via the author’s views on things (as would anyone telling you about The Similarillion, but I think Tolkien would approve, given how hard he went on the unreliable narrator aspect IN UNIVERSE) that don’t necessarily quite match the book, but I’ve never seen a better retelling of something like this that gives you an amazing shape of the story! (I mention discrepancies only to avoid confusion down the road, not because I would change anything in the story, I recommend the same thing about my own “let me yell about The Silmarillion primers”!) There’s so, so much they could do with this Amazon series, even if they’re not going to cover canon-heavy moments, because they don’t want to get too bound up in the Tolkien Estate’s heavy hand on those things. I don’t blame the Tolkien Estate for this, they’ve been pretty burned on Tolkien adaptations, but I AM very curious how this is going to go forward, now that Christopher Tolkien is retired. How will the board/any future leaders go, once Christopher passes? Keep the same strict rules? Loosen up because they could be making a shitload of money? I HAVE NO IDEA. I’m not getting my hopes up too much, given how Amazon seems to be aiming for the lesser known parts, they want more creative freedom, so they’re probably not going to show us the big, known events, much as I’m sad about what we could have gotten from the First Age. The fall of Doriath, a giant fucking fight between all the Valar where they BROKE A PIECE OFF THE WORLD, the War of Wrath, Fingolfin vs Melkor, Maedhros throwing himself into the volcano, LISTEN DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I WANT A STORY THAT TELLS THE SINDAR’S POV ON ALL THIS NOLDOR BULLSHIT???? The Second Age has some incredible stuff, but I’d be surprised if we even get an Elrond cameo (if only because the casting was one of the best things about the PJ movies and they wouldn’t want to contrast against Hugo Weaving) or even really cool nods like that post going around about how there’s this shadowy figure in the background, helping out all the famous elves, and we’re all crying because it hurts. Because that cuts a little too close to being restricted to canon only and I think they’re probably going to be setting up a bunch of OCs set within the world of Tolkien’s Legendarium. WHICH KIND OF MAKES ME SAD, because you pay that much money just for the rights, never mind actually making the show, why are you not using the parts we already love. Show us that weirdly hot smith who befriends that other hot smith! Show us Gil-galad and his army! Show us Glorfindel coming back to Middle Earth! Show us Elros’ death! Show us the rise and fall of Numenor! I WANT TO SEE THE GIANT WAVE CRASHING DOWN ON THEM! Show us the founding of the Gray Havens! Show us the founding of Rivendell! Give us a story about how the former Elves of Doriath decided to travel east to set up Greenwood, how all that went down with the Silvan Elves! Make us care about them, so when we realize a full two thirds of these Sindar/Silvan Elves are going to die in the Last Alliance, we’re crying about it! Show us the looming realization that OH GOD THIS HOT SMITH IS GOING TO FUCK EVERYTHING UP, NOOOO, CELEBRIMBOR, DON’T LISTEN TO HIM--! Though, in my heart of hearts, I always have wanted a First Age set series about everything that went down in Doriath. G O D getting to see Thingol telling these assholes to get the fuck off his lawn after they lied to him, getting to see Luthien steal a Silmaril off Melkor’s crown, crying over the death of Finrod, the sheer amount of HURT seeing everything in Sirion go down, with the little wee twins, them coming to care about Maedhros and Maglor, IT’S SO RIFE WITH STORIES THAT COULD BE TOLD, sobs.

A character from VanossGaming, Hoodini. I was to lazy to write the characters name on Illustrator but I think that like this it looks good too.
