Practitioners are called “Verse Speakers” or simply “Speakers”.
This type of magic has roots in siren magic, and therefore has some links to the sea. There is also a vague association with the Holy Word and angel song, meaning that the origin of this type of magic may have links to Heaven or the Heavenly Arts.
This type of magic is passive, and does not require materials. You can’t really turn it off. It’s a watered-down version of persuasive song, and now is considered something like passive charisma.
Verse Magic is based on words. The power lies in the words spoken, sung, or written, regardless of medium. The power is essentially in the fact that it manipulates the target (intentional or not) into favoring the user’s word.
1. How is it learned and executed?
Verse is passed down through bloodlines, having originated in the same species as sirens, sylphs, and other magical creatures that use the power of sound to change and manipulate a target.
2. How is it accessed?
It’s a latent property of self. It activates around the first stages of maturity (childhood, ages 5-7 in humans)
3. Does it have a will of its own?
No.
4. Is it restricted in space and time?
Probably not? It may wear off after a while, since it’s only active when people are talking with each other.
5. What does available magic do?
Verse enables anything the user writes, sings, and says to be very attractive, regardless of actual quality. It is often used for swindling and debating, as well as making business deals. The people that can use this magic are usually sirens, politicians, and businessmen. This is a latent magic; meaning, you’re born with it.
However, higher related family, such as clan leaders and elders, will always have a control higher over children and younger family members. Thus, the majority of Verse Speakers (or simply speakers) live in hierarchical family groups.
6. How does it relate to the character, plot and theme of the book?
Young-Ah inherited this from her father. Her latent stubbornness combined with this repel the control of other blood mages. The Adriano clan heads all had this as well, which explains how the Syndicate was able to make so many shady deals and spread their influence so quickly in recent years.
7. What is the cost of magic?
Nothing.
8. What can it not do?
Verse is known for its ability to influence and manipulate viciously. It can lure people (sirens) and it can be used to sway favor during debates (Business and politics). It is also known to repel other forms of manipulation outside of Higher Verse. Speakers are notorious for gas lighting and lying, but on the flip side, can be found to be the best therapists and ambassadors. This depends on the individual.
9. How long does it last?
It usually only lasts as long as the person is able to justify it in their mind. Good subtle Speakers are able to plant ideas on the sly and allow them to cultivate. Strong Speakers are able to overwhelm and plant ideas in hearts and heads that endure regardless of justifications.
10. Who can use it?
Blood descendants can use it. While it is hereditary, it’s not the same as blood magic. Blood transfusions do not spread this type of magic.
11. How do others react to it?
It’s subtle. Generally, it goes unnoticed in the modern world, because what comes to mind are sirens, not the CEO of a company.
12. Why haven’t people with this power taken over the world?
Technically, they do rule the world.
