Dryad’s Moon | New Moon in Taurus | May 11, 2021
“Shall I not have intelligence with the Earth? Am I not partly leaves and vegetable mould myself? -Henry David Thoreau
The Dryad is the shy, quiet spirit of the tree that does not differentiate between self and the rest of Nature. Taurus is said to be the most earthly of the Earth signs. So on this moon, this Dryad’s Moon, we reflect on Nature, on the things that make our life possible and more enjoyable.
We look closely at objects which we may perceive as “inanimate.” If these objects (wooden coffee tables, a favorite book, coffee beans) originated from a living being, are they really inanimate? If they came from the living, but their genetic makeup has shifted slightly, are they no longer living? The sunlight they took in, the nourishment they received, the joy of the rain or the pain from being torn down, do the remnants of those emotions and experiences remain?
On this Moon, we thank these objects for giving us a better, more pleasant life full of caffeine, insightful passages, clothing to keep us warm.
Maybe like the Dryad we find ways to connect with Nature, something so familiar to us even though the majority of us rarely come into contact with it daily. Maybe we take a walk barefoot. Maybe we sit in a park and take in the fresh air (socially distanced of course). Maybe we recognize the beautiful circle that is the transaction of breath between human and tree. We exhale Carbon Dioxide, the trees inhale it. The trees exhale Oxygen, we inhale it. Maybe that is the most important realization of this New Moon, remembering our roots.
