Weirdly enough, I've never read Treasure Island till now either, despite being familiar with the story through various wee kids' editions, and about a million and one film/TV versions over the years. But the book is definitely tops, because Stevenson's writing is so wonderful. :)

I much prefer Kidnapped, I have to say, but I still enjoyed this one very much. If you do give it another shot, I'd be interested in what you think of it this time round. :)

I've only read some excerpts of it online, but I think I might need to pick up a copy! It looks not unlike your Nicholas Thomas book about Cook's voyages - headcanons vaguely disguised as srs biography. :P

Bigger bummer would be wasting time trying to graduate with the wrong course.I know you know that sort of thinking's messed up but I need to remind you-there's no rule about when you should graduate and what from and what you need to accomplish next.

Thank you, that is something I do need to remember.

I'm actually doing pretty well right now. I can't let an imagined course of events overshadow that completely.

Wait a second, why does redemption (if you need to put it that way) not start until you complete the course? The learning and path towards completion is kinda the important bit.

Yeah, that's me being a numpty and letting the expectations of others affect my own feelings of self-worth. 

I want to do the course because I like the learning and stuff, but there's this wee bit of me whispering nonsense about how I was supposed to pass my course already and trying to imply that everyone is disappointed by me. Which they're quite clearly not. I'm doing okay.

At the most basic level, I do not care about the qualification because I genuinely just want to learn. But the whole system is geared towards the end goal of a wee bit of paper and when you are expected to work towards that and told that your future depends upon the qualifying bit then it's hard not to shake that off.

And also I had a sort of general feeling of where my life was going and that involved graduating this year at this time of this year and to have that set back by four years because you chose the wrong course is a bit of a bummer.

They are a bit like the big version of Mongolian gerbils (twice the size or more). Very intelligent, very curious and they need a huge cage to run and dig and jump - I made mine from a wardrobe.
