this is a love letter to mary
i have met mary three times in total. she is an older grad student in my program. i know nothing about her. she is very pretty. she has red hair. that's about it
but here's the thing: a few nights ago there was a department-wide night out at a bar. i don't drink and am not used to being in public and am generally not a very social person, so i was hanging out in a corner, and mary saw me, and she asked me if i knew everyone there. and i said no, and it's hard recognizing people i met over zoom
so mary went through every single person and said. that's alex do you know him. that's rachel do you know her. and made sure that i knew every single person. facilitated introductions a couple times. it was the second conversation we'd ever had, and the first one was literally just introducing ourselves in a shared computer lab.
but it was just a really, really kind thing that she had no reason to do. it means a lot to me. so thank you, mary, wherever you are. hopefully we can have another real conversation sometime soon
