Setting someone’s life total can be one of the meanest things you can do in EDH. It doesn’t matter if you’ve gained hundreds of life last turn, now you’re at 10. 10 is a scary life total in EDH, the rough equivalent of being at 5 life if we’re talking comparisions to starting life total. Magister Sphinx and Sorin Markov share this ability, and the fact that it’s much easier to recur this guy or blink him makes him much more powerful. Setting anyone you want at ten is a very potent move, and is often more powerful than most combat phases. Just be prepared for the hate that’s sure to come your way, or at least people copying it to set your own life total. Magister Sphinx is a really competitive card, and it’s easy to see why.
