She finds Amelia sitting outside the old church hall on Cherry Street, arms wrapped around her knees.

The neurosurgeon looks up as Maggie approaches, and there is such a bone deep exhaustion etched into every pane of her face.

“I couldn’t go in,” Amelia says, and her smile wobbles for a moment, something sharp rippling under her expression “I don’t know why I just-”

She breaks off with a breath of a laugh that sounds more like a sob, and Maggie doesn’t say anything, doesn’t know what to say. There’s a metaphorical do not engage sign plastered all over Amelia right now, but she steps closer anyway, sliding down the wall to sit beside her in the cold.

“You know,” Maggie offers after a second of silence, breaking that blanket of quiet, “it might be warmer in a cafe.”

Amelia’s shoulder presses against her own, sharp angles and broken leather, and Maggie can smell jasmine as she shifts closer, tipping her head back to rest against the wall.
