“where did I imply I’d like to harass anyone or report every fic I don’t like” Right here : “I could never report people posting alec/women stuff despite it being homophobic, because it doesn’t violate their terms. I can’t report pretty much anything, because as long as you’re not plagiarizing, it’s all good” You state that you want to report stories containing a ship you do not like and state that you would report other stories with an implication that you would do so because they contain problematic elements you do not like. “and you ppl GOTTA stop talking about this in super vague terms as if I’m protesting things “I don’t like”” You and I appear to have very different definitions of the word ‘vague’ as I was being nothing if not blindingly clear on my stance. You did, in fact, make a post bemoaning AO3’s policies not allowing you to report/flag things that you do not like. “when I’m talking about people who write cp, sexualized abuse (eg 50sog), and straight up homophobic content.” As I’ve pointed out on multiple occasions, AO3 is in compliance with US Law. Since publishing child porn is illegal in the US, it is not allowed to be posted on the site. Per their TOS: The Archive of Our Own is a place for fanworks. Content may not be uploaded to OTW’s servers if it <<<<<<<>>>>>> to child pornography (images of real children); warez, cracks, hacks or other executable files and their associated utilities; trade secrets, restricted technologies, or classified information; or if it consists entirely of actual instruction manuals, technical data, recipes, or other non-fanwork content, including non-fanwork creative work (refer to the ToS FAQ). Uploading such content is a violation of the ToS. I’ve placed a large emphasis on the crucial conjunction of this bit of legalese, but for those of you who just skimmed it, I’ll reiterate. The AO3 TOS expressly forbids the uploading of content that CONTAINS or LINKS child pornography. It’s against the rules. You are well within your rights to report it! Every other instance of explicit content, however, is allowed but must be appropriately tagged so that stories can be properly filtered when using the search function. You can set your own preferences for tags you wish to avoid so that stories with content you do not wish to see will not pop up when you search. You have the functionality to report stories that are untagged or improperly tagged. So yeah, you do not have to look at content you don’t like if you don’t want to look at it. You do not have the right to tell people not to write content you don’t like, no matter what platform they are using to publish on. For a more simplistic example, if you hate cookies you do not have the right to say that I can not bake my own cookies or sell my own cookies or publish a cookie cookbook or share my homemade cookie recipes or eat my own cookies. “if you like those things and think they’re okay, you should be criticized.” That’s why the comment section exists - for critiques and criticism. But I’ll be honest if you came onto one of my stories calling me a piece of shit for writing about rape or sexual slavery or genocide or any one of the numerous ‘problematic’ tags I have on my stories, I would most likely report you for harassment. Mainly because you seem to be the type who just glances at the tags and judges based on that. I don’t know how I got that idea, maybe it has to do with you blatantly saying you’d report a story for having a ship tag you don’t like. I’m getting pretty tired of repeating myself about this shit, but AO3 was created for ALL fanworks to be housed within the bounds of legality. It was created in response to previous fandom bans and purges, which were triggered by people with very similar attitudes to yourself. That is why we are having such a visceral reaction to your demanding AO3 allow you to report such content. We’ve been there before, we’ve seen the pain that kind of thinking causes, and we do not want it to happen again. “you ppl are seriously acting like I’m gonna shut down ao3 bc I don’t like porn in general, even tho I’m talking about abuse” Yeah, I don’t think you want to shut it down just because of p*rn in general. But you are pretty much demanding unchecked ability to report fics for content you don’t like, which includes p*rn you don’t like. No one here believes you alone have the power to shut down that website, but we do believe and know for a fact that groups of people who think like you can. As I’ve said a number of times, pushing for a blanket ban on a subject gets even benign stories caught in the crossfire. Because if you say abuse is no longer tolerated, then your exxing out any possibility of writing a story in which there is abuse including stories about escaping it, stories about getting vengeance on abusers, and stories about prosecuting abusers. And then, with abuse banned, you get people coming along who are even more zealous than you are about the definition of the word and suddenly things that were never considered abuse before are now abuse. Stories about first dates in which one character’s word choice isn’t up to par with someone’s idea of what first date conversation should be gets reported as abuse because 'gas-lighting’ or some other spurious reason. Or someone reports a story about two friends where one punches the other playfully in the arm and calls it abuse. That’s how it starts. You are complaining about fandom elders for making an inclusive environment for fan works. You are complaining about the people who have worked damn hard to ensure that you and other younger members of fandom don’t get sued for writing your fluff and your slash and your coffee shop AUs. You are complaining about people who worked to give you and younger fans a place where you don’t have to worry about someone reporting your works out of spite or misplaced morality scares. I’m sorry that explicit content upsets you, but there are tools in place for you to avoid it, just like you can walk into a bookstore or library and avoid reading books you don’t like by glancing over the summaries on the dust jacket.
