This past year, my camera roll has been so sparse in variety, quality, and content. Of course, life is so much more than pixels and posts, but lately it really has felt like there’s been so little to share. Over the weekend, I got a glimpse of hope while hearing the Dallas Symphony Orchestra x MET Orchestra perform Mahler’s First Symphony, under the direction of Fabio Luisi. Live music, from contemporary to classical, is such a gift - I had forgotten the thrill of it. . The MET Orchestra was not able to play a concert since last March, so this unprecedented collaboration with the DSO mutually benefited their COVID-19 Relief Funds. Economically, what a blow this pandemic has been to the musicians community. Because there were so many empty seats to maintain social distancing, the ticket sales probably didn’t amount to much. Fun fact: Mahler completed the first version of this symphony at age 27, but didn’t stop fussing over it until two years before his death. It has been presented with a program, without a program, with a title, and without. Movements and titles and narratives have been added and deleted. Traditionally though, the First Symphony is performed as four movements. . P.S.
