Serpent & Dove follows Lou, a witch disguised as a common thief who flees to Cesarine to escape her destiny-- ultimately death. Throughout her time as a thief, she crosses paths with chasseur Reid Diggory, an orphan turned royal guard for the church and country, whose sole mission is to destroy all things witches: "thou shalt not suffer a witch to live." Their paths are eventually caught at a crossroads in which they must marry-- Reid to preserve his honor and Lou her safety. Together, they find that their histories are far more entwined than they ever thought, and the future each believes holds near is torn into pieces at the shadows that are left behind.

The book is the first installment of the trilogy and opens with a bang. Had you told me that the book was Mahurin's debut novel before reading, I would have laughed, but now I'm in utter amazement. The writing, development, and characters had such depth it is near impossible to believe otherwise. Lou was bold yet levelheaded. Her sharp wit and tongue was never a detriment and added much to her personality, which contrasted well with Reid's coolness and reservedness. Some might argue that the book was longer than it needed to be, but I found it quite the contrary. Its length allowed for better buildup for the angst at the book's end and served as a wonderful conduit for the worldbuilding necessary for the remaining installments. All in all, the book was a pleasant surprise, and I couldn't stop myself from reading its entirety in one sitting.
