"You are not the great conspirator, but one of two who will stand between what has awakened and the retribution it seeks to reap against man and god."
The Crown of Gilded Bones picks up from A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire, where Poppy is the newly dawned inheritor of Atlantia. We follow her through thick and thin and acceptance and betrayal, as she learns what it means to be beyond mortal, a queen, and more.
Nevertheless, this third installment was both an incredible and disappointing read. Until Chapter 45, the book focuses on storybuilding, centering around Atlantia-- its politics, its people, their acceptance of Penellaphe as their ruler-- and the gods and deities glossed over in the first two books. All these chapters were necessary filler towards Chapter 45 onward, where the story actually progressed in plot development.
"The days yet to be seen are not foretold. That even what the gods may have in store for us is not written in stone."
A powerful takeaway all readers derive from the book is that, per the headline, destiny is never carved in stone. What we believe our future holds can transform as little or as vastly as possible, and Poppy truly embodied this sentiment throughout the entire book.
I am curious as to how much more Armentrout can stretch the series anymore than 1-2 books but am excited to see how the plot develops. I had initially planned to rate the book a solid 4, but after the events in Chapters 45-50, I was tremendously disappointed in how the immaturity of the characters, particularly Penellaphe, who would not learn her lesson from the first time around (Imagine going to a museum or a zoo. You. Do. Not. Touch. The. Art. Or. The. Animals. Especially when it's your second strike. For her to be a ruler but fail in this simple aspect despite multiple warnings from Casteel and co. is beyond me.) Because of this fallback, I had intended to downgrade the rating to a 2, but the last chapter rectified almost all wrongdoing, so 3.5 it is.

Synopsis for book one
After losing her father, Katy and her mom move across the country to West Virginia. With her luck, Katy's new neighbour is pleasing to the eyes...maybe even abnormally so. But that's not all, this town has it's secrets--maybe that's just how small towns are. Little does Katy know that her new neighbours Daemon and Dee are more than they appear to be. As Katy is swept into Daemon and Dee’s lives, she quickly learns that they are aliens; as she spends more time with them, Katy has an aura which makes her a target to other aliens. Paradoxically, Katy must be protected by the twins while also losing the aura before she gets killed.

“But the contact... it evolved with the second pass of his lips, and mine parted, welcoming him, and that kiss was far more than something physical. In that kiss, I could feel our love for one another, our acceptance of each other. It was like taking all our hopes and dreams and rolling them up into one kiss, and it packed so much powerful emotion, that it was a punch to the very core of both of us. It was just a kiss and it was nearly too much and it still wasn’t enough, and it was just beautiful.”
