They Tried
Xue sits alone in the interrogation room, facing a camera. Their hands rest flat on the table, fingers tapping idly away. Dull pink nail polish, chipped. Several rooms away, in a conference room, the feed from the camera is broadcast live on a large monitor.
“Can they hear us?” asks a nervous-looking man. Middle-aged, brunette, dressed in the standard suit. A police profiler.
“Not right now.” Ango seems to grow more exhausted as he opens his computer. “Our mic is push-to-talk so they can’t hear us unless we want them to. Are you ready to begin?”
“Yeah.”

S: Sorry for the wait. We were ensuring that everything was ready on our end.
X: Fine.
S: After some digging, we found evidence of your involvement with the United States’ Special Abilities Branch?
[They snap the wide, rubber bracelet they wear around their left wrist]
X: What of it? Am I in trouble?
S: No, but we’re interested in how you ended up tangled up with an elite branch of the US-
X: You ask them that. [Their tone is hostile.] We don’t get a choice. They’re perfectly willing to pitch us into the slammer or a psych ward if they find out you’ve got an ability.
S: Excuse me?
X: You heard me. If they find out you have an ability- if they think you have an ability, they’ll pick you up.
S: Your police records were clean though.
X: Yeah, they sponged mine after they had what they wanted. Did you look at anyone else around me though? Drug charges handed out like lollipops.
S: We’re here to talk about your involvement with the US Military, not your grievances against them.
X: [They sit back in their chair, looking directly into the camera.] The GED they gave me is fake.
S: Pardon?
X: The GED that I received in the US is fake. It’s valid, I suppose, but I didn’t actually earn it.
X: They were nice to me, too. There’s one kid in my unit, nasty piece of work for an ability- practically brainwashing- they had his kid sister. Paying for her chemo. So they said. She died anyway, and they locked him up when he stopped cooperating after that. For what?
S: [Not broadcasting to the interrogation room.] I think we should suspend this interview…
