From the Here we go again prologue
“Your majesty,”
Eliot turned around and saw a talking wolf. The wolf was large and majestic with white fur and red eyes, it stood as tall as Eliot himself. It reminded Eliot about the direwolves that Quentin had loved. He used to draw them for Teddy while he ranted about the television adaptation not getting them right.
Oh Teddy… when was the last time Eliot had actively thought about his son?
“I haven’t been that for quite some time.”
“300 years and two, when you lost the election to High King Margo,” the wolf said.
“And I was never particularly good at it.”
“That’s not how I remember it — did you not sacrifice for Fillory? Did you not get banished by that oaf that called himself Fillory’s god because you were trying to fix things and it was actually working? My cousin spoke well of you. He was quite fond.”
“Your cousin?” Eliot asked.
“The Great Cock.”
“Oh huh..”
“He was the one that gave you the quest was he not?”
“He was — even though the quest wasn’t… we didn’t exactly stick the landing.”
“A lot of mistakes were made yes and set forth the situation in which we find ourselves.”
“I lost someone very important to me,” Eliot admitted.
“A lot of us did — the Dark King wasn’t fond of us questing creatures, the only reason I am still standing is because he could never find me.”
“I am sorry about your losses.”
“He wanted something in particular but his heart was much too corrupted for any of us to be able to achieve his request. But yours isn’t.”
“Excuse me?”
“Your heart is good Eliot Waugh — it’s shattered right now but underneath the pain you have a good heart. I could give you the same thing he wanted and perhaps you could fix all that was broken.”
“That seems like too much responsibility and the last time I had that I fucked everything up.”
“You don’t have to fix everything just enough so that the world fixes itself and it will… of course you could continue to mope around here waiting for the world to end. Then you’d have to encounter the man you loved and tell him that you weren’t brave enough to try.”
“That’s — that’s a low blow,” Eliot said and he could swear the wolf smirked at him.
“Perhaps but it worked didn’t it?”
“What would I have to do?”
“I’d send you back to a moment of your choosing and it would be like everything after that ceased to exist. You’ll remember everything that you know right now, not more and not less.. To use your lingo your quest would be to fix what broke..”
“What’s the fine print?” Eliot asked and the wolf looked impressed.
“Wisely asked.”
“I know all about magic and loopholes.”
“I can only send your consciousness to your own body and preferably after your time with the time key — I mean I could but then I’d have to recon with Aion which is something I’d much like to avoid,” The wolf said.
“So if you were to send me when I was possessed…”
“You would still be possessed and it would be for naught.”
And then it hit him.
The answer was as obvious as it had been in the Happy Place.
He knew what was the first thing he needed to make right, his biggest regret.
“I know where I need to go.”
