The Murder of Maile Gilbert
Maile Leilani Gilbert was a six-year-old girl and first-grade student. On 25th August 1985, she was at a family party in her home in Kailua, Hawaii. At some point, Malie was abducted from the party. Maile's abductor, James Lounsbery, an acquaintance of Maile's father, was located several hours after the kidnapping and led detectives to Kaena point where he had buried Maile's body. The body was found in a shallow grave along the shoreline. She had been strangled and raped.
Lounsberry was convicted of her murder. He is currently serving a life sentence. Hawaii's equivalent of the Amber alert was named the Maile Alert after the young victim.
