The Murder of Maile Gilbert

Maile Leilani Gilbert was a six-year-old girl and first-grade student. On 25th August 1985, she was at a family party in her home in Kailua, Hawaii. At some point, Malie was abducted from the party. Maile's abductor, James Lounsbery, an acquaintance of Maile's father, was located several hours after the kidnapping and led detectives to Kaena point where he had buried Maile's body. The body was found in a shallow grave along the shoreline. She had been strangled and raped.

Lounsberry was convicted of her murder. He is currently serving a life sentence. Hawaii's equivalent of the Amber alert was named the Maile Alert after the young victim.

The Ten-Year-Old Murderers

James Bulger, 2 years old, was with with mother shopping in Merseyside, England. For a moment James’ mother looked away and two 10-year-old boys, Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, took his hand and led him away. His mutilated body was found on railway line 4km away from the abduction sight. The ten-year-old killers were the youngest convicted murderers in modern British history.

CCTV from the shopping centre showed Thompson and Venables observing children and choosing a target, they were bunking off from school and stealing items like sweets, batteries and blue paint, some of which were found at the murder scene. One of the children later stated they were planning to abduct a child and push him into traffic. At 15.40 James’ mother was momentarily distracted but realised her son was gone. At 15.42 CCTV shows Thompson and Venables leading James out of the shopping centre. Around 34 witnesses saw the older boys leading James away and on the 4km walk to the railway tracks.

When the boys arrived at the railway tracks they began torturing the toddler, throwing blue paint in his eyes, kicking and stamping on him and forcing batteries into his mouth. The boys dropped at 10kg iron bar on the child who suffered 10 skull fractures. The pathologist found James had suffered so many blows, 42 in total, that it was impossible to determine the killing blow. Thompson and Venables then laid James’ body out across the railway tracks, weighting his head down, in the hope this would make the murder look like an accident. The small body was severed in half and found two days later. Elements of sexual abuse were debated by police.

The two boys were charged with murder in a case that shocked the nation due to the young age of the victims and the murderers. Both boys were found guilty of murder. The boys were later released and given new identities. Venables was later rearrested and returned to prison for violation of his release, child porn possession.

The Abduction and Murder of Cherish Perrywinkle

Cherish Lily Perrywinkle was an 8-year-old girl from Jacksonville, Florida, who was abducted from Walmart on 21st June 2013. Donald Smith was later convicted of her murder.

Cherish Perrywinkle was in the Dollar Store with her struggling single mother and two younger sisters, her mum wanted to buy the children clothes including a dress for Cherish but could not afford all of them. Another shopper, Donald Smith, offered to buy them clothes at Walmart with a gift card his wife had given him, he offered to give them a lift to the store. The three children and their mum got into Smith's van and went to Walmart where they shopped for 2 hours. At 10.30 pm, Smith offered to take Cherish to get a cheeseburger at the store's McDonald's store, the CCTV showed Smith leading little Cherish out of the store instead, she was never seen alive again. Cherish's mum reported the abduction and an amber alert was issued. The next morning Cherish's half-naked body was found in a creek behind a church, her body showed she had been strangled, raped and beaten.

It was found that Smith, a convicted and registered sex offender who had been released for prison just 20 days earlier, had taken Cherish into the back of his van, although Cherish was a cautious child it is thought that due to being in his van earlier that day she may have thought it was safe. Cherish had been gagged with such force that her gums and nostril bled before being manually strangled with a piece of clothing, causing blood vessels burst in her neck, there were hickeys on her body, multiple abrasions and her Smith’s DNA was found inside and outside of her body. She had been raped and suffered severe injuries due to the violence of the act. The horror and brutal trauma the young girl had endured had likely lasted hours. The closing argument for the prosecution stated that Smith ‘tore her apart.’

Audio recordings of Smith speaking to other inmates was used at his trial. This included him saying ‘I’d like to run into her at Walmart,’ when seeing an underage girl in the prison and ‘She had a lot of butt for a white girl,’ when speaking about Cherish.

Smith was found guilty of murder and sexual battery and sentenced to death. Crime scene photos of the murder had to be limited and reduced the jury to tears.

"Woman Murders 3-Year-Old Daughter to Pursue Lover: Crime Patrol Inspiration"

The investigation into the discovery of a three-year-old girl's body inside a suitcase in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, has directed the police to her mother. The suspect, Kajal, has been apprehended and has confessed to the police that she was involved in an extramarital affair and wanted to separate from her husband. However, her partner did not want her daughter to accompany them. Consequently, she slit the child's throat, placed the body in a suitcase, and discarded it in a bush.

The woman has also informed the police that she plotted her daughter's killing after viewing the well-known TV series Crime Patrol.

The remains of three-year-old Misti were found in a red trolley bag in a residential area of Muzaffarpur's Minapur on Saturday. The discovery of the child's body stunned the community, prompting the police to establish a Special Investigation Team to investigate the crime.
